Tips or Tricks for Group Dungeons @ V16

dominic.iraceb14_ESO
I waiting to complete Group Dungeons until i hit V16 due to the challenges I faced at earlier levels.. I assumed they would be easier and other Players would thank me for helping them when i returned to those earlier levels of the game to help out. Boy was i wrong! All i do is get bitched at because playing with 3 other "level 30" characters increases all the enemies in those dungeons to V16 as well..

The Group Dungeons are hard enough for me at V16 and playing with other lower level players doesn't help as they are getting eliminated due to the enemies power increase. What am i suppose to do??

    Don't be the Group leader.

In Group dungeons, the level of the enemies scales to the level of the Group Leader.

Don't be the group leader if you're going to help people that much lower in level than you are.

Otherwise you're just leading them to their own slaughter. Which is humorous in its own right... :D

If you form a group through the LFG tool, all the group members (and enemies) are "battle-leveled" to VR16. If they can't complete the dungeon while battle leveled, it's on them.

If you want to avoid battle leveling, you can form a group without the LFG tool. Each player will then retain their own level, and the dungeon and its enemies will be scaled to the group leader's level.

For pre-made groups dungeon scales to the groupleader's level(as the above posts says), if you use groupfinder to find even 1 person, the place will scale to v16 but it will also scale everyone in it to v15-16 so they'll have comparable stats etc. They will still be lacking some skills/passives so might still be a bit harder for them though.

If you found them through "activity finder" the dungeon will always be scaled to V16.
If you group up with them manually, just let one of them lead, and the dungeon will scale to their level (change leader before entering the dungeon).

My guess is the first one. If people complain about anything in a so called "PUG" (group found through activity finder), it usually means they are morons. Nothing good ever came from complaining in a dungeon. If the players are new (no championpoints) they should refrain from doing dungeons until they are level 45 (that's when they get the official undaunted invitation). If the player is experienced, lower levels usually do fine. But if they moan, please refer to my first statement (about morons).

If you end up finding someone through activity finder that seem nice/competent/whatever makes you feel nice about playing with them, strike up a chat. Ask if they want to join your guild or if you can join their guild (so you can team up some other time for a dungeon).

Activity finder is really a lot like grinding. You know what you are looking for, but most of the time lady luck will just laugh at you. It's not how often you fall down, it's how well you get up again. Try, try and try again. Eventually you will meet nice people.

You have to ignore the rude people.

Last night me and a friend were playing our lowbies, lvl 26 and 32, and qued for a random dungeon. Were were grouped with a VR16 templar healer and a tank that left so fast i dont know what he was. i swapped my DK to tank and we three maned 90% of the dungeon till the healer lost conn right before the last boss. He was very nice and we had a pretty good run. Had fun and we really appreciated him sticking with us. Would have thanked him had he not lost conn before i could.

So just play, have fun, and try to ignore the rude people of the MMO community, they are numerous.....unfortunately.

And on behalf of the lower levels you help....Thank you!

My advise would have been try to do as many as you can before v16 so youll have undaunted skill line at 9 and knowledge about the dungeons that will make future runs easier.

For now do as many dungeons as possible but do WGT Prison and COA first with at least 2 friends, preferably with ts or similar direct communication. In general; use tips from others in your party if they make sense and dont try too long if the party isnt functioning but dont give up after few tries either esp if group shows progress/ If a party is doing well suggest doing more dungeons together. Add nice and good players to your friendslist.

I actually miss when the dungeons would only queue you with appropriately leveled players, don't get me wrong, it regularly screwed up especially for anyone who was Vet 1-15, but those early level dungeons were a hoot for me.

Anyways, if your lvl 30 players want to clear the dungeon without any challenge, make one of them lead and you just slaughter everything.

Do i just wait outside of it, then let them add me to their group?

Yes...if you use the group finder everyone in the group will be auto-scaled to v15. There's nothing wrong with that. Normal dungeons might be a bit slower with lower levels people but generally very doable. Veteran dungeons will definitely be harder so start with normal and do that for a bit until you get the hang of it.

If you really want to do a dungeon at a specific level lower than v16 then manually form your group without using the group finder. While you form your group anyone can be group leader. Before anyone enters the dungeon, however, set the group leader to the player whose level you want the dungeon scaled to. Generally this is the lowest level player as this will result in the easiest dungeon but its up to you.

The *only* time I've done a group dungeon - I was higher level than others outside waiting to do it & did not want to be the group leader as knew it would raise the dungeon my level which would not be fair, so had to resort to lurking around hoping one of them would form the group & invite me - which they luckily did. And had good fun running around madly & completing the thing without really knowing what I was doing.

But would like to do more but find this hard for 2 reasons.

First am nearly VR16 so worry that people will think I am far better at this game than I really am! - have got this far just through quests /pve so an utter noob in a group. But am willing to learn if done kindly & with laughter. Do belong to 2 guilds but never that many on when I am nor in my area.

Second I find it hard to meet people on the console with no text chat. Few use headphones and the emotes are limited. Would love to be able to quickly say something like 'thanks for asking but cant group now as have limited time on today & am doing writs but perhaps another time.' without having to write down the name of whomever inviting me & then exit the game & email them through PSN. Hate that the only choice is yes/later/decline as seems so rude to just click decline.

But that may be because I am older & English :)

    -Take responsability for your failiure

-Reflect: What happend? how can I solve this/these problems?

-Research: What ressources do I have? people I can ask? Guides online? Make a strategy of my own thinking?

    - Now that you have this precious 'new' knowledge You want to apply it to your own strategy. Memorize and Visualize what you need to do and go do it.

    - However before this you must remember that you are a part of a team. Thus You need your social and communicative skills enacted to effectively share your new found information between the members of your group. (IF needed, maybe they are already aware)

    - Share this information, your ideas, your source of information even when problems arise or maybe even beforehand. Thus take responsability for your ideas and remember to also encourage the players in your group to adhere (follow) to your strategy (this ofcause only if they are ignorant of the mechanics of said encounter)

Doing this while having common knowledge of how to use a mouse and a keyboard for PC gaming, not being hindered in some way having a physical or mental handicap, I am sure you will now prevail. Keep calm and remember Your strategy, Your newfound knowledge has made You stronger.

You do not seem understand how the group finder works and neither do these "bitching" players. Scaling up to v16 is what it does and non vet players can group for normal version dungeons with vet players. What you are supposed to do is find friends and guilds where players of your own capacity will run these needed dungeons with you. Utilizing the promise of a silver key on pledge days works best. Or, if you are doing this for simple completion, grab a low level from zone and drag him through the run at base sale and blow it out.
I didn't choose tank life, tank life chose me.

The Group Dungeons are hard enough for me at V16 and playing with other lower level players doesn't help as they are getting eliminated due to the enemies power increase. What am i suppose to do??

    Dominic,
    1. Keep in mind that Group dungeons are MUCH harder than regular solo play content. It is NORMAL to wipe a lot of times when you are first learning how to play through them.
    2. To get through them (for their yummy skill point on first completion), you need to learn a lot about mechanics: - both how a team interacts in the roles of tank, healer and (two) DPS/damage dealers (pick one, don't try to be all three); and the various BOSS fight mechanics in each dungeon. What does the boss do? Where do you need to stand? Do you focus on adds or the boss? How can you avoid or mitigate the various types of damage that the boss does? etc. The best way to learn these mechanics is through lots of practise - keep trying. However, there are also writeups and suggestions as to how to do all the dungeons on many websites - e.g. Deltia. "Google is your friend" :)
    3. Group dungeons work a lot better if you are in a guild or have other friends/contacts where a) you can go with the same people on a regular basis, b) actually find other people to help do the dungeon with you when you have time to do the dungeon, and c) you have teamspeak/mumble/discord/gamevox/skype or some other voice communications system. Voice communication helps a LOT for co-ordinating battles and explaining boss mechanics and other difficult fights. Guilds are also a MUST when you eventually progress to Trials. If you DON'T have a guild or regular group, I'd recommend trying to figure out how to be a Healer or a Tank, as there are fewer healers and tanks around, and every group needs them.
    4. START off by doing all the NON vet group dungeons (silver key pledges, if you are Level 45 or higher). They are a lot easier than the veteran dungeons, and good for learning group tactics and the nature of boss mechanics. If you can form a group of four players, set the lowest level player as leader before ANYONE ports into the dungeon. This will set the level to the leader level; mobs, bosses and loot will scale to a maximum of that level. (If someone goes in too soon, you have to all exit the dungeon, break and reform the group again to reset the dungeon level). Make sure to check if anyone is doing the quest inside the dungeon, and wait for them to complete any necessary steps for the quest. If the dungeon is also the day's pledge, make sure to kill all "optional" bosses first, before you do the final dungeon boss fight, otherwise you will get a lower level green key reward from the Undaunted. (There are a few dungeons where it is easy to skip one of the bosses if you are not paying attention or don't know where to look). Note that group dungeons scale down to various minimum levels, e.g. L10 for Fungal Grotto, vs L45 for Vaults of Madness. The mobs and bosses will not scale down below that level, so there is no point going into Vaults of Madness with three level 20 characters - they will die fast.
    5. Whenever you have time for the daily pledge, go to the second zone capital city (Wayrest/Mournhold/Elden Root), pickup the pledge, and have a look at the zone chat, if you don't have a group/guild already in mind. Learn the acronyms, e.g. "LFG" is Looking for group; LF2m is "Looking for two more", etc. Respond or do your own advertising for a group as needed.
    6. When you are in a group dungeon, make a point of first having everyone check their weapon charges and food status. Then also ask if anyone is new to the dungeon, or say if you are doing it for the first time. There are some jerks who will bail immediately, but it's only polite to let others know if you need info before the boss fights. Rather do this at the start than have to ask how to defeat a boss after the 3rd wipe.
    7. Repeat until you have done all the nonvet dungeons at least twice, and are getting familiar with them. Keep doing the daily nonvet pledge each day for the XP, silver key, and progress points towards the Undaunted skill line. You want to eventually enable all the Undaunted skill line passives. (The skills themselves are situational; the only must-have is Inner fire, the ranged magic taunt for tanks).
    8. Now, up the difficulty level by doing the same nonvet group dungeons again, "at level", e.g. with everyone in the group at vr16. You should know the mechanics, but the bosses will give you a harder fight. Note that if you use the grouping tool, my experience is that dungeons which are scaled up to vr16 by the grouping tool are HARDER than those where everyone is already vr16 and no-one in the party is scaled up.
    9. By this stage, you should have a better idea of how you are doing in combat in your normal dungeon role. You should now be looking at optimizing your vr16 gear sets, skills rotation, champion points etc for your role. Lookup various builds online, and ask your guild members for help/advice. Your gear should be at least purple if not gold. Also, if you are on PC/mac, install and use FTC or AUI addons to get a better idea of how much damage you are doing. Practise more. As a DPS, you aim to be doing 15,000 damage per second (single target) or more against bosses, and higher against trash mobs. (You won't start out that way). You should have at about 20k health (with food) to be able to survive in vet dungeons - tanks should have at least 28k health. Healers should never run out of magic....
    10. You are now ready to start trying out the VETERAN dungeons and pledges. Again, do them with a regular group if possible, and read up online first about boss fight mechanics. Vet dungeons are an order of magnitude HARDER than the nonvet group dungeons. It is normal for many (new) groups to wipe many times, and sometimes even give up eventually. Start with vet Wayrest Sewers first - it is the easiest. Vet City of Ash is the longest and hardest of the older dungeons, although the gold key condition remains very hard for several (especially Crypt of Hearts and Banished Cells).
    11. To do a VET dungeon in "easy" mode, set a vet 1 level character as leader (crown) before anyone goes into the dungeon to scale it to vr1, have one person go into the dungeon, then have them pass the crown to someone else, kick the vr1 character, and invite a replacement vr16 character. Now you can do the dungeon with all vr16 characters, but with the mobs and bosses at vr1. (vICP is still super tough, even scaled down this way). This option will be harder to use soon, see below.
    12. Leave the two Imperial City dungeons (if you have the DLC) for last, and do White Gold Tower (WGT) and Imperial City Prison (ICP) in NON veteran mode first. In nonvet mode, they are about as long and difficult as veteran mode of City of Ash. In Vet mode, they are much, much harder. Note that you can still get a silver key from WGT and ICP in nonvet mode, if they are the Vet pledge of the day; but if you do them in vet mode AND the final boss in hard mode, you get TWO gold keys from the undaunted. (If you do them in vet mode but not hard mode, you only get a silver key). vWGT and vICP are some of the hardest content in the game - you have to become fairly good to be able to get through them.
    13. Once you can complete most of the Veteran dungeons, you should also try to join up for Trials groups, which are just bigger and more challenging dungeons. DragonStar Arena is a four-person trial in Craglorn (try it in nonvet mode first); most other trials are for 12 people, and different trials call for different numbers of tanks, healers and DPS. You may need to join a guild which specifically focuses on trials to be able to do these, as it often takes longer to form a group of 12 players, than to finish a Trial...

Note that scaling dungeons down to an easier difficulty level (for a quick and easy key run and undaunted progress) will be much harder for VET dungeons after Dark Brotherhood comes out. This is because the current Vet rank system is being replaced by Champion Points, and for the most part, almost every character will be max level as soon as they hit Level 50, because Champion points are account-wide rather than per character. (Champion points are also gained super-fast when you initially get to vet ranks). I currently have a vr1 alt that is left at that level just to be able to scale vet dungeons down to vr1 if needed, but when DB comes out, that character will be at CP160 rank like all my other vet characters. So, if scaling down is important, the only way to do it soon will be to have a second account with a Level 50 character with no champion points...

Tips for running group dungeons using the LFG tool when you are below v16:
    1. I usually wait until level 45+ before I start using the grouping tool. You will get scaled up at any level, but once you're closing in on level 50 you will have most of your important skills and passives unlocked. This is a big deal and is not something that getting scaled to v16 will help with.
    2. Get yourself some good gear and upgrade everything to at least blue. Craft up a good gear set for the role you want and look around for set jewelry at your level. I have a set of v1 Warlock jewelry I use for my v1 magicka builds, for example. Usually you can find low-vr gear in the guild stores for pretty cheap. The key with gear is to make sure it's not too far below your level or the scaling algorithm will leave you weaker than you would like.
    3. EAT FOOD, again as close to your level as you can get. Blue health + (magicka or stamina, depending on your build) food is usually best, although some tanks might like purple tri-stat food. With good gear and food I usually end up at around 40k+ on my main resource after scaling.
    4. Don't forget to have good potions on hand, you don't necessarily need tri-stat potions but any crafted potions can be a big help.
    5. Think about what you need for your role. DPS needs major brutality/sorcery, healers do well with major mending, tanks need mitigation, block cost reduction, dodge, etc.
    6. Don't be afraid to talk in group chat and ask for help. You might end up with prima donnas that call you a noob, but in my experience there are many players willing to give constructive advice.
