Indoril Nerevar

Hey guys! Don't know which section to put this in but question on the lore!

How did Indoril Nerevar die? Was it because of Voryn Dagoth or the Tribunal?

Was reading around the lore regarding the Dunmer race and looking on it, I'm confused as to how Indoril Nerevar faced his death. It's been a while since I played Morrowind so the details are fuzzy.

It said in the lore that:

The official account says that Nerevar went to Dagoth Ur to retrieve the tools, but Ur had been driven mad by the power of the Heart of Lorkhan in Nerevar's absence, and refused to relinquish the tools. Nerevar fought with Ur, and defeated him. Unfortunately, Nerevar was mortally wounded, and only survived long enough for his advisors to find him, and for him to make them swear to never use the tools.

Then I saw this sketch:

Anyways, in summary, just wanted to ask for a clarification. How did Indoril Nerevar really die? Was it from Voryn Dagoth (Dagoth Ur) or the Tribunal?

I thought it got left obscure. If you ask followers of the Tribunal, it was Dagoth Ur.

Just remember that history was written by the victors...

    Damn that's a good betrayal story. I love it :)) Thanks a lot :))

And that sketch, it's so primal, it's beautiful!

Sketch is by Michael Kirkbride. I believe he was the art director for Morrowind for short time, correct me if I am wrong.

@Armann Yea, he was in the art section at that time :) I think he still contributes a lot to the lore of the Elder Scrolls :)

Damn I love that work though :) I think he also did the drawings on Numidium - which was freaking badass :)

This scetch is semi-official by Michael Kirkbride, not a fan art. It showing how every member of ALMSIVI was responsible for betrayiong and murdering of Nerevar.
    Regarding Nerevar death:
    1. Tribunal says Dagoth responsible for Nerevar mortal wounds and before death blessed Tribunal Result: Tribunal later decided to use Tools for greater good and chimers got cursed by Azura.
Second theory as it sounds more realistic and is describing what going on on this concept:
    2. Alandro Sul, shield-companion of Nerevar fleed to ashlanders and spread words that Tribunal seduced by Tools betrayed and killed Nerevar. Result of this theory: "dunmeri" curse of Azura to looks like ugly as vampires who feeding by bravery of their leaders(Nerevar); killing Voryn Dagoth who realised that his best friend was murdered and tried to defend Tools till death(there is theory that he represented on art as dead body in bottom middle of it); betraying and extermination of House Dagoth by other Houses led by Tribunal to save the truth about Red Mountain events. One of the secret is in Vivec's Sermon 36: Using the first letters of all the paragraphs , with the exception of the last one, a secret message is revealed:"FOUL MURDER."This is a direct reference to the murder of the Nerevar at the hands of the Tribunal, and the last paragraph indicates this by the change in the usual words.
And thats the reason why i love tes 3: lore and history is not that easy. And Dagoth Ur in tes 3 is not some typical villain.

Damn... I really love the second theory. Really changes your perspective on Voryn Dagoth before he went drunk with power as Dagoth Ur. It's so dark and real :) Thanks a lot for this share :) The second theory really gave me a lot to think about :)

They look so satisfied with what they did in that sketch... that's fine, i returned and took their lives with Umbra.

Also, Sotha Sil is the only one standing there going: "Why am i holding his face? We're gonna get caught."

@Xerosus Out of all of them though, I felt bad for Sotha Sil after what happened in Morrowind: Tribunal :(

Didn't care one bit for the false-goddess though.

    Long live the Nerevarine!

Long live indeed, doing who knows what in Akavir. And i liked Almalexia and Vivec until i read on the things they did to Nerevar in order to get power. That sketch makes me dislike them even more.

I do hope we get to find out the Nerevarine's fate in the future! :)

Same :( I respected them at first then as I read through the books and lore, I felt utterly disgusted by how they became Gods. I do understand that at one point they did it for the sake of the Chimers, but to overthrow the honor the first Hortator brought to the great houses of Morrowind... now that's just vanity.

Still though, Vivec did his best to help the Nerevarine in stopping Dagoth Ur but I have no idea if it was just to cover up what the Tribunal really did.

For now, I'm just speculating :)

As with many things TES, it depends on who you ask. :p

Regarding the "FOUL MURDER" picture; it merges lore and gameplay:

Sotha Sil cut off his face so that he could return as any race, not just as a Dunmer; Vivec "pierced" him from behind so that he would know how it is to wield a "spear" from front and back and could return as either male or female; and Almalexia cut off his feet so that he wouldn't be task bound (you can ignore main quest, or any quest for that matter).

Whoah... that went darker than usual from 0 to 100 real quick! Really love how ambiguous the nature of the Tribunal is :)

Yeap the various pieces of him represent something as was pointed out.
Also I think at some point it was said that the Immortal godkings the tribunal never killed Nerevar. But the mortal versions of them did indeed kill him. It's supposed to be symbolic and mystical like a lot of TES lore where you can interpret various things the way you like it or the way different sources show it
