When would I not sell a stolen item that isn't gear or consumable

I'm pretty new to the life of crime. I've been having fun with those new (?? to me anyway) locked chests that are showing up near bankers and stuff. The ones that you have to steal the goods out of after picking the lock.

Anyway, I stole a blue item that was like a Scrivener Set or something. Not something you can use. When I tried to sell it at the Fence I got a warning that I couldn't buy it back and was I SURE I wanted to sell it. So of course I thought maybe there's something else i could do with it. So I laundered it instead. I could've sold it to the fence for 250 gold (this character is only level 6), and laundering it cost me 250 gold. But once it was laundered I couldn't figure out what to do with it, so I ended up selling it to a regular merchant for, you guessed it, 250 gold.

Is there a reason to keep these items? Should I have done something cool with it?

Not really no. Some are pretty funny. I found a "Stainless Dueling Jock" that made me laugh so hard I kept it for awhile.

Edit: thieves troves can contain armor set pieces that you may wish to launder and keep.

There's an achievement for laundering 10k of stolen goods at a fence. That's the only reason I've ever not just sold them to the fence. It doesn't cost you anything as you can just sell to a normal merchant straight after but means you don't make any gold on that item. I used to split roughly 50/50 what I sold to the fence and what I laundered until I got the achievement

Cool, thanks for the input. I never should've trusted the advice of that fence! LOL

There's a possability that when housing comes to ESO, (in a year?), that you might want to display some of the more "interesting" in your home. That's the only reason I can see for keeping some of the blue items.

When I tried to sell it at the Fence I got a warning that I couldn't buy it back and was I SURE I wanted to sell it.

This is more for those Blue and Purple Motifs and Recipes that you might steal, rather than the desire or need to keep what you steal. Also, TG started putting Blue Gear in the Troves.

As for items that you steal that I might keep, I have a pocket knife on a couple of my characters. And, one character did have a Skooma Pipe, he is trying to get clean, but that monkey is tough to get off his back.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
