Why is this game rated M for "blood and gore"?

Well, the fact this game is rated M and all the female toons have to wear male armor... I'd say the devs are from Saudi Arabia. Or possibly North Carolina lawmakers.

I thought it was rated M because of the cash shop. Kids do not spend well, to quote a classic.

Nah, if that were the case, them free MMO's would not exist.
Many of these are just for fairly everyone...

The only thing that makes this game rated M is the voice chat. A lot of immature crap comes out of the mouths of children (and some adults :) )

Nah, they're just getting the game ready for the China release. NO flesh on sight or the game is banned :D
No, i'm not talking about Korea, China is "much" stricter with it's "official" internet. ;)

It's a game that aiming for T but got M because of one or two small things. ESRB is dumb in some ways.

ESRB raters don't rate the games. They rate the content disclosure of the manufacturer. They only play the game after release to verify that rating and to make sure the content disclosure was accurate.

So every example the ESRB "used against" ZOS was actually provided by ZOS in their content disclosure. They described their own experience using the ESRB categories (http://www.esrb.org/ratings/ratings_guide.aspx), and the ESRB rated that experience.

"Parents felt strongly that a rating system should inform and suggest, not prohibit, and should reflect the product overall rather than quantifying every instance of potentially objectionable content." - ESRB FAQ

ESO in reality is probably a lighter Mature than the content disclosure suggests, but it's not a Teen title across the entire spectrum that rating represents.

There's blood when you slash enemies but, none of the blood splatters on the ground or walls like in Skyrim or Oblivion.

And I haven't seen any gore in the game (other than decapitated hagraven heads which have no blood). One would expect that a game rated M for blood and gore, would feature blood pools on the ground, or dismemberment of limbs.

Why isn't the game rated T? And surely sexual themes arn't the reason. It's merely suggestive at the most, nothing a 13 year old wouldn't know after learning about puberty in health class.

nah it's rated M for Meta. cause thats all people can do is follow other peoples setups for min/max since the soft cap removal

It has a PEGI 18 rating too. Their description is more comical then the ESRB rating, it labels it as 18 for this reason-
"The content of this game is suitable for persons aged 18 years and over only.
It contains: Multiple, motiveless killing - Violence towards defenceless people
This game allows the player to interact with other players ONLINE"

Off topic but why are call of duty games rated 18 when you can join the armed forces and kill for real at 16? None of these ratings make any sense.

United States Army says 17. Yeah that's only a year difference but that's closer to legal adulthood than 16 which is still considered too much of a minor.

Besides you think the Military does nothing but kill people? This isn't the second world war, I'm pretty sure a majority of people can serve out their years without firing a single shot at anyone.

They use to approach the game in a more mature fashion, but the current guys are marketing for longevity that means catering for a niche market, the market sadly is kids & teens. So in order to get them to play they need to tone it down a bit.

Sad to say but most games do this, statistically though it's redundant because most gamers are over the age of 20 with the highest population to my own surprise being between 30-50 years of age.

I always though the 14-25 age mark was the largest population of gamers.

So it's sad for me to see more and more gamers and publishers make more kiddy friendly games, I am not saying over sexualise games, but violence and gore ? Sure Look @ Rockstar, when was the last time we saw anything like Manhunt, GTA ?

Other than Rockstar no one makes those games

It's sad, at least with mods Oblivion & Skyrim can become great games ( What can I say red is my favourate colour, so the fact that I want the blood of my enemies to splatter everywhere is a good thing! )

In all fairness, the army IS all about killing folks.
There are plenty of substitutes for the other tasks they do.
And let's be VERY honest: Why having an army if you do not intend to kill people for whatever reason?
Look at America: there isn't a fight, or they go meddle.

So, what exactly did you say again?

    But, nudity SELLS.
    Simple fact.
I do not want all that, but I also dislike the prudity of the Americans.
    Misplaced prudity, to be correct.
But, it's America, what can we do about that.
There is no cure for idiocy. :P

due to pvp lag been playing a mod'd Skyrim again and coming back to ESO with no HDT jiggle is a let down lol
    OP, I have no idea!!!
If it was more sexy like the sykrim modders have done or like BDO then I would consider it as mature...

I'd love for ESO to have nude addons as a part of the game. I wonder if ZOS had their 64 bit glitch on purpose:

There's some fun sexual, bisexual, homosexual, & pansexual stories and quests... its certainly mature, but that might count as more intellectual content since you usually have to read to get it.
