Tips for Remaining happy in Eso (contribute please)

Eso can wear on people, lag can make you wanna cry, and the learning curve is pretty steep no matter the class you play.

So lets remind some people that it is a game, and it's meant to be enjoyed with some tips and philosophies!

My 10 tips:
1. Get in a pve guild to devote your time to...without people to talk to and associate with any game will feel empty and pointless.
2. Steer clear of PVP prime time, lag is crippling and you need to run "lag free" skills to even land hits and make kills
3. Acknowledge you arn't the best, and even if you consider yourself the best... Listen and experiment there is always more to be learned.
4. Don't be scared to make niche builds. http://esoacademy.com/set-bonus-items/ <<< is your friend
5. Use addons if your on PC, it makes the game so much better, and it's essential in many cases to nail down rotations and test builds to see if they're viable
6. Refine pvp builds at dueling locations (like arboretum district on haderus) (its more fun then you think)
7. If something is not fun, stop doing it. If grinding for 10 hours isn't your cup of tea, go pugging in lfg, run quests, do solo player challenges, dual, and chit chat with guildies. I suggest 3 trade guilds, 1 pvp guild, 1 pve guild... and to always be in Teamspeak to keep the blood flowing.
8. Save your gold. Nothing is worse then the constant stress of being broke. Don't put yourself in that position, be frugal and keep a few hundred thousand atleast.
9. Avoid rage quitters and people that just generally make you unhappy. there are thousands of players. find your click and join a pve/pvp guild together.
10. Make/find a core group. 4~8 players you can count on, gear up together with, and run over tactics with. the game because 1000% more fun, and dungeons become alot easier working with the same people on a day to day basis.

The game *becomes* 1000% more fun, and dungeons become alot easier...

Feel free to contribute your 2 cents in this thread.

    A few extra tid bits:
Don't spend all your time managing guild assets (we got enough work in real life, enjoy the game) ~thats what officers are for!
Don't farm all day every day to make money... there is no reason to do this to yourself. Get out there and play the game!
Grinding can drive the fun out of the game faster then anything else... Get a group together and go do something...
Making and forming niche build sets is one of my favorite hobbies in this game... get creative! there is alot to play around with... and even some vr12 sets are viable in different combos! Some are even just fun to play with like Cyrodils ward!
Do some trials! get some practice in. You don't get better unless you put yourself out there.

Hey, now...some people LIKE managing guild assets as part of their play.

I can definitely get on board with people, people, people. I've been fortunate enough to know some amazing folks out there, and those people keep me heavily invested in Tamriel.

Try things you normally don't do. You might be surprised. Do you always play solo? Try doing some dungeons and adding friendly players to your buddies list or even joining a guild. Never PvP? Try joining a group in Cyrodiil or Imperial City. No groups right now? Go explore and finish some quests or dolmens, or find some skyshards, or kill some mobs for the collectibles. Or pick up some bait and a book and chill out fishing - it doesn't take much attention, so I did the Master Angler achievement reading on my tablet while listening for the audio cue to reel in my catch.

    1. Don't go to the forums :)
    2. Just play the game and enjoy it. Progress at your own pace.
    3. Take a break from time to time.
    (4. Do not panic :))

    For new players:
    - Explore and try out different types of content, experiment and find a class/race/build you like to play.
    - Prepare yourself a bit before you do a group dungeon with a random group. Read a guide, watch a video of a dungeon run, do it once with friends first, and tell your group members that you haven't done the dungeon before so they can help you out with some advice or explain the boss mechanics to you. If you're lucky and happen to get a strong random group they can pretty much get you through the dungeon even if you do very little damage, healing, or tanking. In that case, observe your group members and learn from them.

Enjoy playing the game, don't focus on some goal. Take it in your own time, feel free to enjoy the scenery, stop often to smell the flowers... (and then pick them for alchemy ingredients ;) )

Keep your expectations realistic, if you go to cyrodil for example, expect to respawn a LOT. Accept that, aim to learn instead of to win - much easier to deal with suboptimal approaches that way, if you focus on what you learned about the game or your build instead on what you didn't win...

Don't overdo it, playing too much can be like overeating on your favorite food. This goes -especially- for those cerebrally disadvantaged enough to think grinding is a good idea - nothing leeches all the fun out of something then doing it over and over and over again; there are better ways, though they admittedly take longer. But it isn't a race, you don't -have- to hurry through it.

Don't be afraid to experiement. Sometimes a lot of fun can be had learning how different skill setups or gear combinations work out for your playstyle. This is especially valid for alt-ing... remember the fights you had trouble with on one class/build, see how they go with a different one, sometimes the differences are vast! Also, sometimes its more fun to make a not-quite-super-effective build work for you regardless, though that may be more something for advanced players...

Indulge in the details. There are way more things to do then PvP or follow quest markers... sometimes it can be fun to hunt down all those treasure maps without looking them up, or follow your nose in "hmmm, why is this area even here, I wonder if they might be hiding some treasure chest behind that crombling tower...". Sometimes its fun to find small details that are completely worthless, but just "fer da lulz" (like all those skeletons lying around in some corners of the maps, some of them are interesting in an "imagine how they died" kind of way)

Don't get too hung up on the small stuff. Gold for example seems pretty tight at first, but once you get to veteran ranks, you will find it quite easy to rake in. Horse training can be annoying, but if you don't get too hung up on it you'll get there in time as well. Farming for crafting motivs can be vexing, but that too will come in time (or through well stocked guild stores). Raising some guild or skill line ranks can be annoying, but its not too hard to get there en passant if you just play the game - even if it looks pleab when you finish mainstory and your mages guild is barely at 6 for example... even if you don't especially focus on it, playing through the cadwelsl regions will usually let you stumble over enough books fo get to max before finishing gold. Again, focus on the road, not the goal. Addons can help with some, though I personally think its way more fun to do all the stuff on your own instead of having some program give you a shortcut... makes for a much better experience as well! (personally I just -adored- using the cryptic hints in tje journal to track down all the skyshards on my own...)

Find the right people compartible to your own wierdness. Some people love a great many others to connect with, others just want a few good friends to spend time with, some people quickly fill all their guiold slots, others are recultant to even join one. Find what works for -you- and pursue that. ESO is much more fun if you have friends to share its experiences with. Also, friends or guildmates make for much better dungeon-crawling experiences then -blech- PUGs... :disappointed:

When wandering around the forums, keep a large container filled with grains of salt at hand. A lot of people come here to vent personal frustration, troll others, or pander their own perconceptions. Take the posts here as the subjective opinions they are, refuse to believe them without further investigation, then go out play the game and make up your own mind. ;)

Play what you think is fun to you, if you like to pvp like I do, play with friends, when the lag gets bad, it's time to either do something else in game or call it a night, fun is a subjective term different things to different people. I have started to limit my time in the game to about 4 hours a day during the week and longer on the weekends, I used to play a lot more. Will have to see what happens in this game as time goes by, such a great game so poorly managed. When in comes to the point where you cant find anything fun any longer, time for a break or another game for awhile, that's what I do, sometimes I return sometimes I don't.

Now I wouldn't call it duelling, but it is a great place to practice bits of PvP, and not have to worry about rez time/distance, 'cause it's a click and a shimmer away.

I love Haderus Arboretum, it's really really fun.
