Which abilities classify as DoTs? Do they benefit doubly from CP?

For example, Liquid Lightning and Wall of Elements, I assume they classify as damage over time as they do their damage...over time. So do they benefit from CP points in Elemental Expert as well as Thaumaturge? Or do they only benefit from one of the champion passives?

What about abilities like Velocious Curse and Magicka Detonation? Are they considered DoTs because their damage is delayed?

Lightning Splash, Wall of Elements and the like are area hazards. They deal damage ticks while you're standing there, but are not attached to your character. Damage-over-time effects are basically debuffs attached to the target character.

Yes DoT Skills benefit doubly from the 2 CP trees. I know that Detonation gets buffed by Thaumaturge just like any usual DoT, can't tell you about curse, though.

Pretty much everything a templar has is a DOT, puncturing strikes, their jesus beam execute, vampires bane, blazing spear bla bla bla.

If it does damage in multiple hits then its a DOT and it gets double the CP bonuses. Unfair when a class has every ability classified as a dot i guess but that is ZOS for you.

What is not a DOT: Force pulse, Crystal Shards, Lava Whip, Strife etc.

So in short, some classes benefit more while others do not. It gave the templars quite a boost.... :-)

One thing I haven't had a chance to test is whether or not skills with a direct damage portion with an applied DOT get both sources of damage amped from Thaumaturge. For example Meteor is a big hit then a DOT, would be a bit ridiculous if the initial hit also gets the bonus damage and not just the DOT component.

Out of the ones you listed, only Vampire's Bane has a DoT component.

Nope, jabs and radiant are classified as a dot aswell

DoTs in eso are te following:

    1. Spells doing damage after the cast is finished ("normal dots like vamps bane, engulfing flames, eruption and so on)

    2. Spells with casttime and MULTIPLE hits within this time (jabs, radiant, soul assault, rapid strikes)

    3. Spells with delayed damage (proxy, backslash, curse)

All of these get double effected by thaumaturge and elemental expert (and also get mitigated by their counterpart)

    edit:

Not in ESO. Puncturing Strikes, radiant oppression, and sun fire are all DOTs.
Curse and Detonation are DOTs as well.

There is some misinformation in this thread. DoT is any ability that you do repeated/delayed damage from a single activation. Some example abilities are rapid strikes, jabs and radiant, aoe ground attacks like liquid lightning, eruption and blazing shards, aoe ultimates like standard and nova etc. even prox det. Secondary effects such evil hunter procs and burning count as DoT as well. Take burning embers for example, you would get a bonus from elemental expert, thaumaturge, elf born, spell erosion, blessed and quick recovery (for effect end heal) as long as you had at least on CP in those passives. The same would work in reverse for mitigation and damage reduction.
