Maybe cut down trait-research time?

Hi, does anybody else here feel like the trait research times are a little too long? I mean, one of my characters (V16) is a master-blacksmith and trait research on a piece of heavy armor can go one for more than 10 DAYS!!! I am a ESO Plus member and as I wrote before, my character has max'd out the blacksmith skill, why does it take so long to research a trait??? I think it's a little ridiculous... the wait time should be cut down A LOT. Instead of 11 days, why not 3 days instead? Heck, if the blacksmith skill is max'd out AND I have a ESO Plus membership shouldn't my trait-research represent that?

I just think in all fairness the game devs should look into reducing the trait-research time, make it worth the ESO Plus membership plus all those hours spent buying /finding the gear to research for traits. I don't think I should have to wait that long to craft specialized gear because I have to wait so freaking long.

It does. Metallurgy allows you to research 3 items at the same time and cuts down research time by 25%, ESO Plus brings it down further 10%.

I agree that research times are annoying as hell, but I'm not sure I like the most commonly suggested alternative solution of simply reducing them drastically. We shouldn't be able to become master crafters in a week. If we could get a system based more on player effort than on time, then I might be in favor, but let's be realistic: it's not going to happen. So I think it's best to keep research times as they are. The first 6 traits go pretty fast anyway.

On an even less pleasant note... Just wait till your research takes 30 days. :D

Why were you not researching while you were leveling to 50 on blacksmith? The times are what they are and you do get a bit of a break with your plus status. I do not think they need to be adjusted. It should take time to get all those traits as the crafted gear is well worth it. That is my opinion however.

I'm already nine trained but I think the way the research system works is ass backwards. Wouldn't a more experienced crafter find ways to cut research times instead of increasing them?

It's ridiculous how long the ninth traits take to research and punishes the experienced crafter rather than rewarding them. It should be opposite from what it is now.

I am dreading researching a tenth trait if there ever is one. Come on ZOS!

    Lol, 10 days.

Nah, it's good where it's at. Adds meaning to 9 trait item sets.

Would love some TLC to crafting though. Like the ability to change traits on armor and a second bonus to the 5 piece bonus once you've learned all 9 on that piece.

10 days? You are complaining for 10 days?
I would KILL for 10 day research times again.
I've still got another 20 days before my 9th trait in Heavy Helms and 2h axes are done.
After that I have to wait 30 days to get research done on 1h Axes, Maces, 2h Mauls, Daggers and Heavy shoulders.
    AND THAT'S ONLY IN BLACKSMITHING.

Researching is a time sink and if you think you got it rough with 10 days....I'd suggest just giving up now because it gets so much worse.

I wish there was a separate pack to store the items you need to research. I'm down to 1 or 2 traits on everything and when I decon things I don't need, I have to be very careful that I don't accidentally decon my research items. Sucks when you decon something you need and then have to hunt that item down again. Done that a few times and learned my lesson.

Quick question: my main is the main crafter among my char. Though I need a pair of nirn sword and I have to research them, taking me 1 month or so. So, can I just make my alt research the nirn trait (it'd take a couple of hours) to obtain those swords faster or did ZOS put a particular restriction on nirn traited item crafting?

Let's see, has a problem with a minor part of the game... Immediately states subscription status.. Have you read the business thread that was just up here? You know, the one which states self-entitlement doesn't get people anything?

Reducing the trait times would severely devalue the crafting lines. If you want to be the top of the top craftsmen, (9 traits is a good qualifier), you've got to have something to invest in for something to be proud of, or profit off of.

Sorry, that's just how it is. Changing it now would hurt all of the craftsmen who have already invested into their traits.

We have bigger problems on this game than custom tailoring it for every special snowflake.

There isn't a restriction, however, if you want to do 9 trait crafting sets, you'll have to learn nirn on your crafter regardless and getting the nirn to make the item can be a hassle if you farm it yourself.

I would like it if daily writs reduced the time left on your research (for that craft only) by 1%. If you did it every day for a week you could knock off a couple days if you were at 30 days to start. 4-5 days if you did it for the full 30 days (25 days since it would be done faster).

I would prefer anything to the "click button and wait 30 days" approach. It is very non-interactive and uninspired.

Roll a mule character and put the researchables on them. That way you can't decon it. On the PC, we have addons for this to note that which we need to research, or even hide things from the crafting tables.

Though, I do find researchables quite easy in the guild stores on the PC/NA.

Given that the most powerful set items are obtained through crafting, it does therefore make sense that you need some time to get all the research traits necessary to make the best items in the game in order to craft these set items.

In total, it's going to take you a couple of months to research all traits on 1 item, so for 7 items it will take you 3-4 months to research all traits.

Some games require you to farm materials that are quite difficult to find, others rely on daily cool downs for certain crafting components, while ESO require trait research. It all boils down to time gating to make players choose and invest in the pieces they want to craft. I don't mind, crafting in ESO is actually useful, unlike in WoW where crafting is next to useless.

Been doing them for 2 years (obviously not focusing on them) and quite happy its taken so long. Med Armour done, Last 3 being researched for light armour, woodwork 4 left an blacksmithing a good couple still to go.

In order to do research, you need to invest 12 Skill points to make research faster and do 3 at a time. You get these available to you as you level Clothier/Blacksmith/Woodworker - so you already have a bonus to make it faster as a level 50 crafter. Why are you asking for another bonus? Dont want to invest the skill points?

If anything, i would ask that the "Insight" that you get for completing crafting level 50 writs could be invested in the current research you are doing. Eg you earn 1000 Insight for completing a writ, you can then select to put that insight into one of the pieces you are currently researching. If 100 insight = 1 minute, you can then wipe off 10 minutes from the research from that piece. It would make that insight useful because when you are already at lvl 50 in that crafting style, it is pretty much useless to get that on writs.

I just finished the last of my researches on my dedicated crafter. At least you can still play the character and do things in the game while researching is going on.. If you are having problems with 10 days, wait until you get to trait 9. Mine were 27-28 days each. As you put skill points you can unlock the number of items you can have researching per discipline to 3 which makes it a bit easier.

Overall I think it is fine as it is. Some things should take time to get done.

What's the longest it can be? I'm guessing 30 days?

The length of time it takes doesn't actually bother me, I'm only up to about 8 days at the longest and I know it's going to get worse but I'm in no hurry to finish it. It helps that my crafter doesn't do a lot else (except collect Skyshards) so storing the items isn't too much of a problem.

But I do think it could be worth looking at alternatives. I suspect this system, like the once a day horse training (or feeding as it used to be) was put in place so that even if someone wasn't actively playing they had a reason to keep logging in on a regular basis and therefore a reason to maintain their subscription, so that if/when they did start playing again they wouldn't have fallen behind. (This is why I suspect the longest is 30 days, if it was any longer you could let your subscription lapse until you needed to start on the next item.)

Now that you don't need a subscription to log in that system doesn't have any benefit for ZOS, and it seems even people who don't dislike it aren't actually happy with it, so maybe it could be changed.

Problem is I'm not sure what would be better. As other people said there still needs to be some type of barrier to stop people being able to max crafting in a day, otherwise it looses any meaning (one thing I dislike about Guild Wars 2 is they made crafting so easy to progress that everyone levels it themselves, crafts for themselves and it looses any social aspects, plus it makes for a weird economy where raw materials are worth more than finished products).

I think some sort of mini game, which gets harder the more traits you know but easier with higher crafting skill could be fun, like the lockpicking, but I can also imagine some people would hate that.

It would be nice if (with skill points) the last few all capped out at 2 weeks each. Still a decent length of time, but not crazy one month levels.

Course that's just wishful thinking. To me it's a minor irritation, not huge game breaking issue.

The 8th and 9th traits take 52 days combined to research (22 days + 30 days) without a subscription.

There are 34 pieces to research and 9 research slots.

    Assuming you're always researching something, it would take (34 x 52) / 9 = 196 days or 6.5 months to research the 8th and 9th traits only.

I feel that if research takes so much time, it's because ZOS wants to reward his older player base.

They already gave passive skills for reduce research timer, and eso plus bonus. This was made in update 6. I finished all armor types 9 traits about at that time, and many others did too. I think the time is long yes, but it doesnt require much to research other the logging in, press research, log out. And like I said, they already have improved the research time by alot. I think it should stay like this. Its easy to get a crafter to craft 9 trait anyway.
