Reaching Mages Guild 10

Ok, I'm working on a second char. (Magicka Nighblade). I've almost reached level VR1 and unlocked all the skills I need. However, I will need to start farming lorebooks to get my Mages Guild skill-line to 10. I've already done it on my Magicka Sorc and I hated every minute of it. However, it was easier with that one because I had unlocked the other 2 alliance zones and could access those books too. I wonder if it is possible for me to get to MG10 with the books found in my alliance and Cyrodiil only or whether I will still have to unlock another alliance zone.

You need to collect every book in your alliance to achieve lv10 mages guild, it shouldn't require anywhere else from what I have seen.

Are you saying that both the "blue" and "red" books increase my MG level? (see map in link below)

As far as I now, only the books that disappear after reading increase your MG level, not the ones that stay.

Supposedly its possible, or thats what I heard. I wasn't able to do that though.

From my understanding it is only possible for one faction to get to 10 with only their lore books. And if i remember correctly that faction is AD. Now i dont know for sure, so maybe that is just a rumor. I also dont know if that includes cyrodiil.

But either way of you get all the books in your faction you should be very close by the time you start the next faction.

I did this recently on Xbox one. Its all about collections. I was stuck on 8.5 for ages (had done alliance zone collections and 'most' of the other ones) and just seemed to get stuck. Then went around cyrodiil and finished a heap of sets and that boosted to be to Ten.

In truth I had unlocked Cadwell silver and had picked up the odd book in Glenumbra, like 2 or 3 tops. but i'd caveat that that I never 100% did all the alliance zone spare ones, so unless I fluked out on a set in Glenumbra in that 2 or 3 I would think if you totally romp all the Alliance ones and complete all the sets you can in PvP land - you wouldnt need Silver.

Just get any lorebook. Whichever the alliance is as long as it's a lorebook you rank it up.

Home alliance + Coldharbour + Cyrodill + group dungeons won't get you to Mages Guild level 10. You will need a few books in Cadwells.

Everyone can get to lvl 10, just need to get all the books (almost), it's a pain to do so

It's not possible. On my AD alt I collected every Lorebook in AD Territory and I didn't get to MG10 until I'd collected all the Lorebooks in Stoneballs and Deshaan as well.

AND I'd finished the MG quest line through to Eyevea as well..

Mind u, the other alliance zones should already be unlocked for u now if ur VR1. The old Cadwells route is no longer relevant

It took me about 6 hours to get from rank 3 to 10. I'm in EP and I'm 99% sure that it cannot be done with just those & Coldharbour.

iirc, I got to ~8 with all of EP zones, majority of Coldharbour (2 or 3 are quest-locked and I cba) and like 3-5 random ones in each of DC's zones and Auridon. I then went back and finished the zones in DC and the book categories which are cross alliances & zones but not in the zone categories.

I can personally confirm that if you are in EP then its not enough. I got every book there, in coldharbour and all the known missing ones in Cyrodiil and only reached level 9 (early parts of it too).

Going to a different alliance is needed.

Right thanks guys. At least I know that only the first 2 zones of the next faction are enough to get to MG10.

I have heard that it is possible but I tried it on my mag-DK and did not do it. I got all of the area Lore books (10 per zone) and as many of the extra Lore books (8-14 per zone, some areas have more than others) in each zone I could find. Also I went to Cyrodil to complete any collections to get the bonus XP from that. I was only able to get to rank 8 and a half. I still have 3 more collections I can complete (total of 5 Lore books plus the bonus for complete collection) but that will MAYBE push me up to rank 9....probably will still need a couple books to hit 9. I am DC though so I do not know about the other 2 factions
I have also heard that XP pots and scrolls will give a little extra if you have one going when you find a Lore book but I do not know if this is accurate or not

AD - I had to do some of EP in Caldwells to finish mine out.

I did all of AD, Coldharbor, Cyrodil and I think 2 of EP's zones. Poster above is correct aht book collections are what you're looking for. I focused on that heavily to finish out.

I did this a week ago. Collected all books in my alliance and all in the next alliance, plus some books in the dungeons. My own alliance plus 2 other zones sounds way too little.

Yeah I think you're right. I probably remember wrong. It was probably 2 alliances + 2 zones

I don't believe it is possible, but you can get really close.
My 2nd character was able to get every lore book in Cyrodiil, All of EP, Coldhardour and 16/17 dungeon books and was able to get to 9.
I got all the Lore Books in Glenumbra and the last dungeon book and it got me to 10.

In any case, it is such an unnecessary grind! It would make fare more sense to just complete the Mages Guild quest line (like with the Soul skill line, that advances with the main quest-line)

Each book gives 5, and each set completion gives 20 towards the mages guild skill line.

If you get every book in all 5 alliance zones, all coldharbour books, all cyrodiil books, and all dungeon lore books, you will hit 10. Any alliance. You can be mages guild 10 at lvl 3 if it were possible to travel to those places without gaining xp.

Also, it would be too easy to get to 10 if it was just through the mages guild quest. Meteor is one of the best ults in the game, it should be a grind.

On the 4 characters I have that are Rank 10 in the Mages, it did not happen until the second zone of Caldwell's Silver. I did not have to get every book in that zone, but most of them. My characters for the most part have not been in Cyrodiil. Things may have changed since release or I have done this. Note, I also did not get the books from most of the Group Dungeons on any of my characters when I was leveling Mages, so that is 16 more books to add to the mix.

In the original beta game where we only had the one alliance to go through, you could get to Rank 10 with just your Alliance, Coldharbor and Cyrodiil. But now it seems that you need some from the other Alliance zones to get to 10.

Yes, I've done it with only the first zone. Sometimes it's faster to get the easy to get to ones in zones 1-3 of the next alliance. If you use the addon, you can run to the books lying in the open, rather than fighting thru public dungeons or complex delves.

As far as I know it is possible to get rank 10 just from your own alliance plus cyrodil, I know people who are under lvl 45 that have meteor.

I've maxed it on 6 toons, level 8 on one and 6 on the other.

It's such a stupid grind. Soul destroying.

Yeah must have changed then. I use the AddOn to get all the books, i literally collected ALL the books in home alliance and silver, plus some in dungeons, like 5 max. Cyrodiil not included at all.

OP with thieves guild patch live now you have no restriction to going to the other zones without having done the main story so this should not be a problem...

In short :

If you take all lore books in your alliance, cold harbour & Cyrodiil you would have exactly Mages Guild Rank 9 and 160/ whatever number it is I can't remember but I remember the 160 cause I was stuck on it forever.

Note bookcase lorebooks don't count only Shalidor Lorebooks ( purple glowing ones on the ground)
