Was in a crafting area when I opened my lot, got a large bounty and guards cornered me.

What was strange was that I got even a bounty in the Outlaws Refuge...

    That was kind of anathematic...

Yep happened to me too lol, wasnt thinking, I had one unopened box in my inventory and poped in open near a guard/bank in graftwood, BOOM instant inventory cleaning of all stolen goods... :/

Was a bunch of maps and stuff I couldn't launder since i was over my limit. mostly low lvl zone maps and the normal fencable items.

Fast way to clear out unwanted stolen stuff from your inventory I guess lol. :p

I opened mine in the outlaw refuge but I didn't notice a bounty. I'll have to check when I log back in.

I opened mine in the outlaw refugee as well, in full view of several fellow theives - no bounty.

If you get one... well... then you know you have a snitch! Quick, look around, whose is the new face! Grab that rat, and make them squeal! ;)

This happened to my husband when opening one right next to the fence in Malabal Tor. I had no trouble opening mine in outlaw refuges or the thieves den itself, which makes me wonder if something has been overlooked when setting behavioural properties for that NPC.

Or, maybe there is a dirty snitch! ;)
RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend. I will miss you forever. Without you I am a hollow shell.

    yes

"opening" the crate by hitting "R" is described as "steal".

So... at the moment you open the crate, you actually "steal" at that very moment.

    with all the consequences ;)

Well at least the comments here narrow it down to it being a big a bug. I hope they fix this soon. Seems ridiculous that open a stolen box you already possess in your inventory would get you in trouble.

If it was by design it would be stupid because that would mean NPC's could see what you have in your in your bag, if they did they would be in a uproar if you were cooking a stolen fish.

Or when you think you do not have bounty on your head, walk into a bank and can't flee without handing over all your loot. After that experience I tend to go to a fence first ...

No, it's been confirmed in another thread: the bug is that you aren't supposed to get a bounty when you open it inside a thieves sanctuary. When you open it out where an NPC who should be reporting crimes can see, you're supposed to get a bounty. The game even tells you that.
