I know there are more than a few post about fishing but recently I've had a problem that I can't seem to work out.
I know where to use each type of bait and I normally do quite well, I've caught my fair share of rare fish too.

But sometimes it just stops working, I go from catching fish in one spot (maybe 3 or 4) and then at the same fishing spot I start catching "used bait" over and over.
I cant understand why it has just changed as I was fine on my last cast. I've tried moving about and re-casting my line, waiting longer to reel in and reeling in as fast as I can and even try different baits, but it all ends up the same. You've caught "used bait"

Does anyone out there have any idea why some fishing spots just stop working or any fishing tip on how to get them to work again?

Sometimes when you switch holes the other bait works for a cast or two. Happens where two water types come together, it seems to me.
Just switch baits and you'll be back to catching.

If you are getting used bait, you are using the wrong bait type for that hole. Are you on PC? If so there are some addons you can get. Once you fish too long in a hole it will go away and you have to find a new one.

It seems like fishing holes have mainly one type of fish but sometimes have other fish thrown in that don't really belong. So my assumption is that the fish for the type of water you are at have become depleted in that hole and the only ones left are the ones that don't belong. At least that is what seems to be the case when I fish although I could be completely wrong.

Are you pulling out the used bait, or throwing it back? To clear a hole of used bait, you have to remove it by placing in inventory. Otherwise, you will catch the same used bait with every cast.

You should only get used bait from using the wrong bait. I ran into your situation when I was new to fishing, but the above tip has worked for me 100%. Once I applied this lesson, I never got more than 1 used bait from holes that were not the water type expected. Once used bait is removed, and correct water type identified, every hole was fished successfully.

Like others have said, used bait = wrong bait type. Sometimes it is hard to tell what type of hole it is, but the fish never lie. If you get these fish you will know for sure what type of hole you have:

Dhufish, Longfin .................. Ocean/Sea ..... Worms, Chub
Spadetail, Silverside Perch ... Lakes ............ Guts, Minnows
Salmon, River Bety ............... Rivers............. Insects, Shad
Slaughterfish, Trodh ............. Foul ............... Crawlers, Roe

Sometimes it can be deceiving as the water type. I fish a lake but the second I get near the water fall I start getting used bait. That's because it see's that area as a river or it could turn to foul if there is a dead body laying there. Also, you can fish with the wrong bait and still get fish. It's just something like a 50/50 chance between used bait and fish.

I haven't seen anything broken. If you are getting used bait then you're using the wrong bait.

I've found that it is in the point that I choose to reel in whether I get fish,a wet bag,or used bait.It takes a bit to get that exact moment to reel in. I get used bait a lot too,even with me being careful.
Same as in real life though.We lose our bait and have to rebait our hooks.

Like others have said, used bait = wrong bait type. Sometimes it is hard to tell what type of hole it is, but the fish never lie. If you get these fish you will know for sure what type of hole you have:

This is the key.

Sometimes the water type isn't obvious, and you can still catch a fish with the wrong bait.

If you get a fish on the first cast then you can determine the water type and make sure you are using the correct bait.

Hm, I never experienced to get used bait when I use the correct bait for the water type - like worms for ocean water will bring in fish and minnow, but no used bait. Newbie islands seem to have just one rare fish and just in one location - at least I found that I can fish a lot of those in just one location - but there with a probability of about 20-25% - like etheric grouper in Stros M'Kai. It is quite nice for newbies, 110g for the fish.

It when your standing on a river that flows into the sea and your in the middle, sometimes worms or insect parts work for a little bit then nothing, just used bait. Obviously I try all the other bait I own but it doesn't seem the catch anything else. I have been told I maybe catching my used bait again because I normally throw it back. Still having a 60% success rate at catching fish until I get frustrated and start fishing with balls of lightning. Yeah fish, how do you like that "used bait" huh?!

If ever you catch used bait buy some simple bait and throw a couple of casts until you catch the fish for that water then you'll know which one to use.

Alternatively there is a map of every region available on ESOhead.

It's the site I used to Fish and finally got the Master Angler achievement the other night after a nervy two hours near the AD Gate. As a DC with no Keeps at the time I'd have cried if I caught the fish and got attacked at the same time.

You have around a 10% chance of catching with any bait in any hole which is why you may catch some with the wrong bait sometimes. I've never read this statistic I'm just going on my early experiences.
