Templar - New(er) Player - Tips?

Hi there!

I have been playing the game for... A little while now. Long story short, I have a now VR4 Templar. I enjoyed solo PvE thoroughly (magicka based - resto - s/b) - PvP was another entirely different function.

I healed decently, whenever anything hit me it was variably game over. Even after some food buff and gear to help me to that 20k health it just never seemed enough.

Even if I could survive, my resources would madly dwindle from attempting to stay alive.

I tried various things before VR1... Higher health, higher magicka pool, high magicka regen. Allocating attributes, different skills... In order to have one be at a good level you'd have to sacrifice in another.

I'm running 5/2 light-heavy (chest, pauldrons...mostly due to not being able to find enough researchable legs) - 4 Magnus / 4 Twilight Embrace.

I guess I'm just more or less trying to get an idea of what I'm to expect moving forward with the class and what steps I need to take to get up onto that next level. I'm not even willing to try VR PvP until about 14/15 or so just to have enough CP to try and compete. PvE I understand it will mostly be heals, totally fine with.

Most other MMOs I have played in the past I've had friends to kind of guide me through the process and here I'm mostly just blind firing.

Any insight or guidance would be most appreciated! Thanks in advanced if you managed to read this far or respond. :)

    cp is major. you are going to feel it in pvp until you start closing the gap in points, and unfortunately you gain cp quite slow in pvp. IF you are serious about competitive, try to set aside some time each week to grind a bit. #sad truth
    try to always pvp with decent numbers if you dont have an endgame build, and very few cp. someone will just come along who does double your damage and resistance/game over if you dont have backup

    The issue here is, it sounds like OP has low CP and therefore will really struggle with sustain in heavy armor. The fact of the matter is that CP makes a big difference for staying alive in Cyrodiil for the less mobile classes.

    I do 100% agree with S&B for your main healing bar in PVP however. Healers tend to be targeted pretty hard, so having the ability to mitigate a lot of damage is important. Also, put a lot of thought into your positioning as a healer. Find places where you are out of direct damage, but still close enough to heal your group... Line of Sight s your friend.

    Awesome. Thanks for the tips!

    Yeah I found that running s/b was a huge benefit. I reset attributes to 15 in health and max health food and it appears to be helping quite well on that end.

    As far as the CP I can kind of see that now and I'll just continue to grind it out.

    Thanks!

    Bothersome thing with templar is that you need a completely different build in PvP.

    While for example Sorcerer can at least get away with normal PvE dps setup, even if not ideal, due to shield stack and ability to kite.

    If you want to survive on a templar you need loads of crit defence. There's no way around it since you lack a viable class shield that makes you immune to crits. Understand that magicka builds will have around 40-60% crit rating while some stamina builds can have over 70%.

    So you need impenetrable trait on all small pieces and focus CP points into resistance.This will do way more for your survivability than wearing heavy armor or stacking health. Many PvE'ers dont know this, that's why they die in 2 hits.

    You also need extra stamina for block, dodge and cc break. If you cant break cc you usually die. Around 15k stamina on a VR16 templar is needed. Purple food and one robust ring or enchant is usually enough.

    You already got good skill advice from @Johngo0036

    Might want to slot Harness Magicka at times though. It absorbs spell dmg and gives you magicka back.

    As a VR3 Magicka Templar with low CP, I'm in the same boat @ROFLSAURUSREXX!

    But a few things that helped me to stay alive while pvpving:

    - I started to watch some good templars fighting, like Blabafat and others that from time to time post their vids here in the forums. I'm always watching and paying attention to their rotation, the skills they usually use, when they engage and when they cover, things like that;
    - I'm reading guides to see all the skills and setup that I can use...and perhaps some ppl just say go NB or other class, I'm happy to see that a good Templar can do some *** in PvP (and I'm not talking about Jesus Beam);
    - I changed from 5 Light / 2 Heavy to 5 Heavy / 2 Light or 2 Light;
    - I'm going to craft my VR4 armor set with Impenetrable and Infused traits;
    - I'm always trying to stay out of the front line because as they already said there: ppl will focus you almost like immediately when they see your heals going out.
    - Stick with ppl.

    After doing all that I stopped dying a lot at least lol and I hope to keep improving while I level and also get more CP!
    Good luck!

    Unfortunately, Magicka Templars just aren't a good solo PvP class. In my opinion, they are probably the worst to play with right now.

    However, if you desperately want to make it work, you need solid gear. I used to run:

    Kena helmet (heavy infused)
    Monster Shoulder (any light that gives 1k health as a 1 piece)
    5x Kagrenacs (heavy chest, the rest light)
    2x Torug's Pact Swords
    3x Willpower
    1x Maelstrom Resto/Any resto is fine.

    Magicka glyphs on the big pieces (helm, chest, legs)
    Health gylphs on the small pieces (shoulders, gloves, belt, boots)

    This way I had around 2.8k unbuffed spell damage, 27k health and around 38k magicka.

    As for the play style:

    ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS stand in either your channeled focus or purifying ritual circle for that 30% increased healing.
    Proxy det -> dark flare -> dark flare -> toppling charge -> jesus beam combo is great
    Try to use healing ward for damage mitigation, otherwise use S&B
    "Rock is too OP, please nerf"
    Sincerely, Scissors.
