How are CP counted?

When a player refers to the number of CP they have, is the number given typically the total in all three categories? Or rather, is it just one category?

On the PC if you float your mouse up on the bar that shows the progress to the next CP, you will see your rank. Not sure on the consoles if it works the same way.
