PS4: Keyboard support for chat?

When will this be implemented?

Game feels like a single player game because I don't use a headset with my console (and don't want to use my voice to talk to strangers) and I don't have a PlayStation Camera (and don't want one, as it's virtually useless otherwise).

Have the game on PC but I don't consider it playable. The controls are too terrible and it's a PITA to try to map them decently to my gamepad (plus there seem to be more players on PS than on PC from what I've seen).

Bah. I gave up and uninstalled the game. It's too hard to do anything that involves any sort of communication with other players. Need a rez when the Waypoint is like 150 miles away? Sit there and wish someone runs by and is nice enough to ask. You can ask in chat, you can't even voice chat because literally no one uses it... There's nothing you can do.

Well, you can log off and check back in a few hours, because running clear across the continent to get back to your quest objective gets old after a while and you just lose interest... That's basically what I started doing.

Need help killing a MOB that's too hard... Sit there while it's staring at you and don't engage, hoping someone else on the quest runs by. No one in voice chat, no way to ask the Area if they want to help.

It's literally a single player game with other NPCs (they're players, but they mind as well be NPCs) that randomly appear.

    This is not fun.

The story was actually getting really interesting. I was really digging the whole infiltration theme going on, but I feel like I am fighting against the game and I just got to the point where enough is enough.

Almost thought about subscribing to ESO+ on the PC and trying to stick it out there, but I shouldn't have to platform hop and pay RL money to communicate with other players in an MMORPG...

    Later.

Yes we all have laid out the problems with communication on this game and as black smurf said its on the year ahead. It should've been in the game at launch but that's another argument. Now that ZOS have announced it there's nothing to do but wait.

I don't expect to see it till summer tbh

No one uses the chat, read the post instead of snipping. I tried it, I was the only person in the channel, in several areas, for like 2+ hours. Other people just never joined, and they just randomly ran around (or so it seemed) as if they were other NPCs in the game.

Games do not revolve exclusively around end game dungeon content. People have to actually get there, and if the experience on the way it horrible, they tend to drop out. This is an MMPROG, not DA:I with a multi-player DLC to run some dungeon content...

But hey, trolling people on a forum is funner, so I can understand why you'd decide to do that instead!

Had you considered the PC game-pad mode. It works great with an Xbox one controller.

It doesn't have voice chat but does have the text box you desire if you own it on PC already

I may have misunderstood your comments tho

The PC platform doesn't require a subscription, so if you have a validated copy that you played on PC previously, you can do so again at no cost.

It also sounds like you tried to make eso work on a gamepad back when it was a pita. Late last year, Zeni introduced native gamepad support. Both the UI and the button mapping should be identical (or close to) what you now have on console. Maybe give it a shot and see what you think?

Lastly, it seems that most console users are in a guild or party channel, not area chat. This is probably leading to your perception that no one else is in the game. Maybe try joining an active guild and using that chat channel instead.

    1. Yes, I know I can access the PC version still. I actually bought the PC version before it went Buy-to-Play, but quit because the controls were cumbersome. I got the Imperial PS4 edition because the controls are better, but the lack of decent communication options is an issue in an MMORPG from a basic playability point of view, for me.

    2. I'm not sure how well an Xbox controller works with an iMac. That's what kind of PC I play on.

    3. I assumed as much, but it's still too hard to even reach out to the community to find out about these things, because you can't just pop into their voice chat and say "hey guys, looking for guild... get back to me." The guild search tools in the game turned up nothing for me, but that may just be me not having a clue how to operate it.

    4. I don't think "no one plays the game," it just feels like no one plays the game, because apart from being in the same voice chat channel no one really interacts with others since the effort to do so (going through menus to pick emoticons or whatever, etc.) is not worth the effort to do so.

I'll check back after the patch hits and see what's up.

Consoles were built around voice communication, not text chat. Don't see a huge problem with talking a few times here and there to request some things, you're not voicing a speech or anything. lol

This problem is more of the User's lack of patience and their preferences, not really the game's and there is messaging via PSN or even try running with a guild and post your requests on a community wall.

There are many other substitutes than just straight text-chat within the game, which will be added eventually.

The problem has nothing to do with the form factor, and everything to do with the type of game being played on that form factor.

Consoles were not built around voice communications. Even on XB360 and PS3 there were chat pads you could buy directly from Microsoft/Sony for those consoles to facilitate text-based communication... There were ALWAYS ways to use non-voice communication on those consoles.

You're inventing concepts, considering the first generation of consoles to really embrace voice communications (XB360/PS3), embraced text input at the same exact time.
This problem is more of the User's lack of patience and their preferences, not really the game's and there is messaging via PSN or even try running with a guild and post your requests on a community wall.
Lol. Do you not see how utterly oblivious that sounds.

It's easy to find a guild when you can't communicate with other players in game because no one joins area chat and they're all in their own private voice chat channels. Gonna just random scan for player names and type messages in this UI with the gamepad at the rate of 3WPM.

    Great experience.

And really... Using PSN messaging... You clearly have not run into the people with locked down PSN Profiles, like me. Good luck sending them messages or Friend Requests. I don't think I should have to use my PSN Account to communicate in an MMORPG.

Again, this is not Destiny, Call of Duty, or some other mission oriented game where your time spend out of group is usually spent doing... not much, if anything. Sometimes you log in and want to just have a conversation.

What if you have Bronchitis that week? What if the house is noisey cause there's other stuff going on? Voice Chat is not appropriate at all times, and it makes no sense that one should have to log off of an MMORPG or simply go AFK simply because they cannot voice chat to have a conversation about in-game stuff...

Regardless of what your warped idea of what a console was designed for, disregarding the fact that you're completely wrong, anyways.
There are many other substitutes than just straight text-chat within the game, which will be added eventually.
So, basically... there aren't any substitutes within the game at all. You just assume that many of those other substitutes will be added eventually, which means any span of time that isn't equal to "never."

    Edit: Typo or two.

MMORPGs, including TESO were built around text chat. Don't see a huge problem with people expecting the traditional, tried and true, form of communication in MMOs to be available even on consoles. The problem is a segment of console users used to other games like Destiny and CoD expecting voice communication to also work well alone in an Mmorpg.

What some people don't realize is that sometimes it's not us (people asking for text chat) who are the anti social ones in a dungeon, most of the time in pugs it's the others who don't join area/group.

ZOS claims that the reason they removed text chat pre-launch is because they wanted to "utilize the features of the next gen consoles" but what they didn't realize or didn't care about is that a lot of us are in party chats with others and we are forced to choose who we want to talk to, talk to pug group, guild, or party chat and it's not fair. I know. CoD is a different beast but you can directly see the impact of party chats in that game as compared to the ps3.

Well for you and a lot who want and are waiting on text chat to be added....If I were you all, I'd make sure to ask ZOS a lot what exactly their "text chat" for consoles is going to be and what to expect. While they may not have a release date, they do know specifically what they plan to offer so it's worth asking because it may not be what some think....even what I think....

But it worth understanding what you're waiting for
Maybe @ZOS_GinaBruno can provide some details as that would be good to read and see on the forums and ESO Live

Voice chat is great for dungeons and whatnot but I feel that having a text window to monitor/take part in Guild chat, zone chat would be great. It may even help build community.

I've looked for a guild ( omg I've looked ) that is social in this game - it isn't easy, and trying to find channels where people are talking, good luck. Text chat could help with this, as it is easier to engage in than voice conversations at times. The drawback of voice chat only is some of the peeps that LOVE the sound of their own voice, which could encourage others to opt out of the current chat system.

I sincerely hope that it's brought in. I'm curious to see if fosters better Guild communication. Or communication in general

If you would like an invite to a guild that runs trials, has a active trader and has a very active community on the ps4 in many many games message me or reply here and I will send you an invite right away and do anything I can to help you out. This game is 2 years old and at this point its gonna be the community that keeps the game alive. Send me a message or reply here and I promise you I will get you into a active social guild. last night I had 24 members in my chat. Text chat is not needed if you run in a REAL social guild that cares and invests in its members instead of their gold. Hit me up I guaranteed you a spot.

This argument will just not die until they eventually release it. It's really simple folks... It's not an argument of voice vs text. BOTH must be used in order to have an effective communication system.

    Voice for groups, text elsewhere.

Voice alone or text alone does not cover all bases which has been proven as ESO has been the industry Guinea pig for the voice only experiment. That experiment failed miserably. As pointed out above if you need help in a zone you are lucky if one other person is in area chat. You are lucky if more than 5 people are in your guild chat (out of 150 people online) and luckily they acknowledged this and were strong enough to reverse their decision.
