What am I?

I'm 1 month on ESO, and about 1 low-intensity year on MMO's in general, so I'm a noob, right? On the other hand, I played my fist computer game around 1977, have played through pretty much the entire evolution of computer strategy and rpg's, and have spent probably thousands of marriage- and career- threatening hours on single-player Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and other games.

I watch some players in the PVE drop-zones. There is a lot of jumping. Occasionally, someone attacks a guard for no apparent reason (controller confusion, I guess). Sometimes, I can't help but rescue some poor soul who is in over his head. Those folks are noobs; like me, yet not like me.

Then there's the others: Half-naked orcs dancing and partying on a Saturday night. Ornately-clad knights riding me down (so to speak) while blasting music. Complicated auctions, sometimes run by what sounds like middle-schoolers. Many, many high-speed, efficient kills. Not like me at all, yet somehow familiar.

I can't be alone, right? I mean, I would like to try some group stuff, but I don't want to drag down an experienced party, nor do I want to be constantly cleaning up after a bunch of tykes who can't focus and are prone to panic.

If there is a word for people like me (other than old) I'd like to know, so I can search for others.

Time to step out of moms basement bro and just mingle.

You're going to find all sorts of people in online games and they're not all bad. Mostly.

    Everyone is a noob.

There are noobs that learn, noobs that never learn and noobs that think they are always right and can't be helped but then there are noobs that learn from others and always listen to all opinions and then makes up how they want to play on their own.

A true noob master is someone who can combine all of the above into an effective noob. You will find other noobs will help you to become a master noob, you can try stuff out for yourself and see if they are right or not. When you can tell the difference between good help and bad help, you have become a master noob.

I think you're reading too much psych into a technical question. I am specifically asking if there is a word I can search for that describes someone with lots of computer RPG experience and almost no MMO/ESO experience. I use a lot of text to ask a simple thing because I really like the sound of my keyboard.

The word you're looking for is "gamer".

If there's a term for it, I don't know, but if you may want to check out the guild recruitment forum. You'll see "mature" or "25+" guilds recruiting there, or you can post saying that you're looking to join such a guild. Good luck and happy playing!

The word for you is "Someone who wants to have fun in the game" Your not alone.

Join a guild of like minded folks. There are a ton of casual guilds full of players who approach the game as something fun to do. Like Lone Wolf Help, we run dungeons, and if we wipe, we laugh about it, talk about what happened, and try again. But no one gets irked or snappy over it. Sure, there are some folks in our guild that are more focused on things, but even then, they don't get all snippy if people are around that are less than the top 1%.

You mentioned your age, I have seen about 5 guild threads that are looking for mature folks (OK, old farts like me being I am 52) to join up and have fun. I have seen these threads all in the past 2 days.

As for efficient kills, that's all down to Skill Rotations more than anything else. Once you learn how to load up your skill bar so you have 3/4/5 of your favored skills and learn which one should be used first, which second (this is all based on some skills that increase the next attack or buff spell damage for a period of time etc) then you will find the mobs melting away like you see. Also, remember, while you can do some damage with straight up melee attacks, your going to do the vast majority of damage with skills, with melee attacks just being weaved into the skill attacks.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

You are an experienced "gamer" who is new to MMOs: an MMO noob

In the games you are used to playing you are either alone or in muliplayer with a small number of like minded players.

In an MMO, you have the full spectrum of everything from kids to oldtimers, brains to idiots, focused to bored, drunk to high, all running around disguised as heroes in armor... or wedding dresses, running around doing amazing heroic feats... or randomly attacking guards and dancing in fountains.

Basically the real world amplified and squeezed into a virtual fishbowl.

Have fun and enjoy the show... and resist the occasional temptation to beat your monitor with your keyboard.

As good an answer as I think I'll get. My question framed me as the exception, maybe I'm more the rule.

Get over myself and kill something, right?

Yeah, you've been playing computer games a bit longer than me (not by a lot - I started on a Commodore 64), and I've been playing ESO longer than you (since PC launch day), but other than those minor differences, we're pretty much in the same boat. This is my first and only MMO. I've played a lot of single player RPGs, strategy, adventure games. I came to ESO because Elder Scrolls. I stayed because I really like it. The fact that a few of my real-life friends got the game too was another reason why I started playing, and they still play here and there, but not nearly as much as I do. I've made a bunch of friends in-game, though, and most importantly I found a guild I like a lot.

So try to find like-minded people. They're out there, and they won't be worried that you'll drag them down, because they'll be more interested in just having fun with cool people, and helping teach you to be a better player (while they hopefully learn things too).

From what you're describing seeing in-game I get the impression that you're on console. If I'm wrong and you happen to be on PC NA I can send you a guild invite to a guild that's got a bunch of people who are happy to run content with people who are learning the game.

In the game play options, you can turn off the ability to harm innocents. That will stop the mayhem in the cities.

I don't think there is a specific word for people like us.

During beta we had a group/guild called the "Greybeards" which consisted mostly of testers from the Zenithar group (nicknamed the "old folks home").
A lot of us joined a guild called "The Elder Moot" at launch.

If you're interested in joining up (PC NA Server), send me a message with your in-game tag and i'll send you a guild invite tonight (I'm at work right now).

Join 5 guilds. Leave the ones you dislike, keep the ones you like. Eventually you will find 1-2 awesome guilds that have like-minded people you really enjoy hanging out with, and 3-4 guilds that you can tolerate and interact with.

You can then ask the exact same question you asked in the OP and get a lot more mileage out of the conversation that follows than what can be offered here in the forums.

When I use the term noob it's not ever as an insult, but rather as a descriptive term to indicate that someone is new to something. I often use the term when referring to myself. I've been playing ESO since launch, but I'd still consider myself to be an MMO noob, as this is my first and only MMO. I'd also consider myself to very much be a PVP noob, as I've done very little of it. Everyone's a noob at something, and everyone who is an expert at something was once a noob at that very thing. Embrace your noob!

Really? The word is all over this thread and I didn't notice much disrespect. Just the opposite, in most cases.
