Why did Zos allow pc transfer?

Because the people who preordered the console versions got screwed since it was delayed for almost a year ( maybe less i don't remember) so they told them they could start playing on pc and their progress would be transferred to consoles when they would finally be released.

It wasn't such a bad move

Umm they allowed it because some of us were promised a launch almost a year ago on consoles that got no eta delayed and wouldn't be fair to say thanks for spending your crowns and last year on pc go screw yourself and start over. Besides there's console players who jave landslide passed some pc players so at this point playing field is level.

They kinda had to it only once.
Z got pretty greedy and sold the console version at least a year before it was actually ready to play. Together with the promise that you can play on PC while you wait and then finally your progress made would jump with you to console to make sure to ruin the balance over there right from the start.
    Mission accomplished. I guess.

ZOS probably wanted to boost early sales of ESO, even though the console release had been pushed back to a much later date. With the promise of the transfer, many people bought the PC version at launch who wouldn't have otherwise.

Nope. There was always meant to be a cap. They just had no idea on where to put it or how to raise it. So they it play out a bit with no limits to see where to put in the cieling.

Money is the simple answer. They totally messed up and had to rewrite the game, so they needed money.

Come, pay me now and eventually you can play on your xbox! So of course they needed to port the characters. Who would pay to have your progress wiped after a year?

It was dumb. They got greedy. You can't change that. Get over it. The whole game should've just been kept in development for another year.

On another note, you could just grind harder and get your cp to cap. Then it wouldn't matter.

I dont think that was actually the case. Given the whole CP design and the exponentially diminishing return values you get from the points I honestly believe they never thought about caps in the beginning. At all.
Later after reality kicked in and because how the system could and was abused in PvP the caps were introduced as a quick fix band aid.
    And here we are. Still.

Also keep in mind that in order to do the PC transfer, they had to add the copied characters to the base console game versions PRIOR to launching the game... so it appears that it is not technically possible to copy characters after the console versions were launched.

Because they knew that there were a lot of players out there (like me) who wanted to play ESO on console. And they were originally supposed to release the console version a couple of months after the PC release. When they had to announce that they were delaying the console release for a year, they needed some way to get people like me to buy the PC version and start playing anyway (so we would still give them money up-front and not lose interest by the time the console version actually dropped). So they promised us that if we bought the PC version when it came out, that we would get rewarded with a $20 console version and a free character transfer when the console version finally released.

So basically, they did it because they still wanted the console players' money in 2014 even though they knew it would be a 2015 before they would actually release the console version.

Honestly can't see how they could think that. With maxed cp on test, people were gods. It was stupid what they could do. Take out WBS in under 2 seconds. I think someone even soloed SO. Perhaps they did underestimate what players could do with it.

Doesn't really matter now though. With catch up and caps, it's pretty easy to get a lot of cp. There are quite a few console players who have surpassed transfers and are above the cap.

Why wouldn't they allow pc transfers? I don't really see the harm in it. Especially with the CP caps we're seeing now. It's a way to help people catch up to those pc transfers

As others have noted the only true answer is money. In the end the benefits for console players were extremely limited since many console players do not play on PC. For those that play on both PC and console, it is unlikely that a PC gamer would ever choose to play on consoles as a primary platform given the severe limitations and cost for XBL/PSN; it can happen however but it is a minority of a minority.

As a result, ZOS needed the money and since the product was delayed they designed a pre-sale of sorts to try and recoup some of the loses from the delay. The problem was that, as noted, it had very little benefit to the audience that was affected (console gamers), and as it was a copy and not a transfer it caused a ton of problems since PC players were able to bring over everything in their inventories at the console's launch. Like so many other things with ESO, it was simply mismanaged.

As stated above... There are many that started on console that have CP totals that far exceed the CP total of most transfers.

So at this point this whole thread is moot.

I'm not so sure they released the way they did out of greed. Most likely they were running low on cash. How many years do you pay people before you see a return on an investment. I'd bet some suit decided it was good enough for the PC community to Beta test so they just dropped it on the market.

I like how every time this topic is brought up people immediately start talking about CP to try and deflect from the actual problem which is the destruction of a fresh server's economy.

Must be nice to have profited from a year's worth of exploits or having friends give you their stuff while your character's were COPIED and not transferred.
Knee Jerk, L2P, Obtuse, Casual, Entitled, All The Best, unnecessary mention of CoD

Battle leveling for pve content defeats the idea of progression. Remove CP

Dang that would have been a good idea. I was just selling hundings for the first couple months but now I can't make money off that anymore.

Conversely I run three enchanter writs a day farming for kutas. Imagine the prices of those with no pc transfers.
