Commoner Challenge: Thoughts?

Soul Shriven
Hi,

Returning player here. The reason I left the first time was because of all the build options available; basically, the enormous amount of skills leads to a great number of builds for every role, but this also creates a concern for build efficiency. I was too worried about how well my build could fare against other builds instead of how much ass I was kicking with my buff bald beefcake. In a pathetic attempt to keep myself from quitting as quickly, I thought up of a self-imposed handicap for new characters: the Commoner Challenge.

The challenge involves three limitations: play a build that doesn't use class skills and Soul Magic, don't use soul stones to revive yourself and others, and distance yourself from the main story as best as you can. What's left are the weapon and armor skills, racial skills, guild skills and the remaining three world skills (Lycanthropy, Vampirism, Legerdemain), so I figure that a viable build for endgame PVE is possible. However, the soul stone handicap makes this challenge unfair for anyone wanting to play PVP content. The third limitation has to do more with the role-play aspects of this challenge; canonically, there is only one Vestige, Savior of Tamriel. Molag Bal's prison holds that hero, but also holds what could be a Commoner character, so playing through the tutorial makes sense. An alternative is to ignore the tutorial and "start your journey" after that point. In either case, try to play the game without progressing the story. I haven't been online in a while, so I'm not entirely sure if it's possible to walk away after the tutorial and never pick up the story from that point; there may be content that requires you to progress to a certain point. Naturally, it's recommended to play a Commoner character in PVE only.

So, what do you think of this challenge? What obstacles would commoners have to overcome to participate in the game with heroes throughout all PVE content? What builds do you think would work with this challenge? Most importantly, has this sort of thing been attempted before? What were the results of that?

Please let me know what you think. I'll keep this thread bookmarked and check back periodically while I re-familiarize myself with ESO.

Thanks for reading.
