Sword & shield pve

Hi all,

So I'm thinking about creating a sword and shield character. Not sure on the class or alliance yet, but....

1... is sword and shield worth it for solo pve? Ive read that its not and only useful as a pvp tank.

2... any ideas for which class has the best stamina skills. I dont want to invest character points in magicka if I can help it. Thinking 3/1 stamina/health.

3... any other thoughts?

Good for tanking. I use it on my DK tank. Puncture to taunt the boss and start blocking.

It's useful for most builds in PvP if you can spend the weapon slot just for the reflect skill IMO. If you create a PvE tank build for dungeons and the like then you'll never have to queue for dailies again!
I have departed into the great unknown that is outside the game and the forums, and wish you well in your Tamriel adventures!

    DC - PC - EU - Australian
VR11 Mrderrikk: Breton Stam Sorc (Vamp) | VR16 Derrikkinblack: Dunmer Mage DK | VR3 Cuts-Until-It-Dies: Argonian Magicka NB

    Oh look, Anook.

MrDerrikk is right, plus as a good tank its easier to drag even poorer pug groups through most dungeons.

Ok... I created a templar sword and shield redguard guy. I like the ideas of buffing allies, while taking a massive amount of damage. Only level 7 at the moment, but it shouldn't take too long to level up. If anyone needs a tank for pve in a few weeks then drop me a message. Xbox one btw.

    Templar

    1HS & Shield

I use puncture & shielded assault as main skills (puncture for the taunt & shielded assault to stun trash)
Splash in the sun shield + blazing spear + breath of life

I rarely die, and can do a bit of backup healing. (usually on myself if the healer in the group isn't keeping up)

But currently at 45th level my stats are:

    10 / 16 / 18 (mag/health/stam)

For PVE I feel I fare very well, and when I do public dungeons it's very fast to queue up and people constantly ask me to do another run with them...so I'd imagine that means i'm a good tank.

I'm very new to this game still (only been playing since late November 2015).

So if a scrubby nubby like me is faring well with 1HS & Shield in PVE - i'm sure a person with experience building multiple chars will kick butt.

Honestly, you're much better off with a dragonknight or nightblade tank.

Reason is you can swap from being a full on tank in pve to hitting like a truck in pvp with a gear and ability swap. A templar tank is stuck as pretty much a tank most of the time. Not so easy to switch.

Dragonknight is the easiest to tank with. I'd wait until your probably vet to start tanking. Fresh pit your toon. Get all the skills you need and level them up first.

As far as 1h and shield goes apart from tanking...

You can do a lot of dps with Ransack, light attack, bash combo. A lot of people in pvp use it. You could easilly do all this quests using that and invasion and that's it.

What if you make your main bar sword and board and your secondary bar 2HS?

That's what I did and my main bar is for when i'm tanking and when I want to be a damage dealer I just switch to 2HS with wrecking blow, charge, biting jabs, and repentance.

I'm not max level or exceptionally experienced, so i'm not arguing i'm just checking if that's a viable strat in your eyes.

I did sword & Board DK for a while, up to V4, then switched to 2H/DW.
Better DPS, better AOE, and alternatives to stay alive.

    Bashing is fun though.

Loved Puncture weaving on my stamina DK. Only leveled him up to VR1 so far, but did most of that in normal Maelstrom Arena, so you should be fine almost anywhere else.
Will probably add 1h+s on my stam templar as well.
Alandrol Sul: He's making another Numidium?!?
Vivec: Worse, buddy. They're buying it.

Tell that to my VR16 Templar, who swaps from a sword & board tank to a DPS to a healer at the drop of a hat by simply swapping gear/slotted skills.

    Im on the eu server.

Been putting 2 points to stamina and 1 to health and magicka. Mainly so that I can boost my damage survivability while boosting my healing spells.

And puncture thing is such a useful skill.

1HS & S still very viable for PvP and PvE, but the downside is you will use lot of stamina, because your actuall damage will not come from the weapon itself, but you will heavily rely on skill for doing good damage

thus for the stats, i really suggest you to use all points to stamina, don't bother with health since Heavy armor already viable enough for survivability

for doing "good" damage, i suggest to concentrate on puncturing strike, firey breath and scaring strike, morph them to stamina state later on

I've never tanked on a templar, but from what I've seen with tanks I've done dungeons with you need to use a lot of magica. Blazing shield, shard to pull aggro, channeled focus for resistance buffs. So you need a decent magics pool. Which means less in stam so less damage.

I might be wrong, but I'm just going off what I've seen and been told. If you made a toon for 100% tanking, that's fine. But with my Dk I can tank pledges then swap gear and still have a really good dps build too. Not sure you can do that with a temp though.

I'm not too fussed about damage cause my end goal is to have a really good tank/healer for pvp/dungeons.

Alot of people complain about there jot being enough tanks/healers... so guess I thought I'd help you all out. ;)

well then if you want to full tank doing solo pve, sure, why not, but you will take more time to kill the mob but thats it, still do-able
