Sorcerer weapon crit?

I spent some of my champ points in weapon crit chance (lvl 30 increases crit chance by 12 percent) and weapon crit damage. I am firing my destruction staff both on spells and itself in between.
Does that sound OK, because someone said that increased weapon crit is not useful for a mage???

You do not need to increase your weapon critical chance as a magicka based sorcerer. Spells and staff attacks depend on spell critical chance.

Well that sucks. They call the destruction staff a "weapon".
I dont understand why the weapon critical chance does not increase that.

weapon crit for stamina weapons/skills
spell crit for magika weapons/skills
