I was browsing through streams and saw someone I know so I start watching it. I noticed he's AFK in Stormhaven's Undaunted (DC) so I go over to where he is and he doesn't show up for me.

Also, in his instance there were different people. I'm pretty sure he also couldn't see the people that were in my instance.

The game can generate overflow instances of zones. I think it's by the entire zone, but it's possible that it's more localized. Used to be pretty common, especially in the Level < 16 zones.

To be fair, it's actually a really cool blend of multiple very modern technologies and was, frankly, a purely inspired move. Unfortunately, even with all these cool technologies working together, the system as a whole can't seem to handle certain combinations of player count and ability use in some arbitrarily small map area. Doubtless this is some consequence of data bottlenecking on a too-small section of the machine/machines handling that map area. Details are obviously subject to the exact distribution methods they're using and how the whole architecture works, which isn't something any of us can comment on. We'll see how this changes in the future.

@Kammakazi if it happens again you can use the travel to player function to join their "shard".

You laugh at it, but that's exactly what it does: Less people in the same instance means less lag, better performance and since it's a megaserver everyone can still chat and join a party together.

In other games you choose a Realm and you stay there for ever, not being able to play with people in other realms in any way. Here we only have two megaservers: USA and EU.

Presumably this is also why we don't need to queue to get into maps, because if one's full we can just go into another copy.

The word "instances" reminded me of trying to do quests for the first year with a friend, lol. They would always be invisible and in another instance no matter what. Used to be so annoying. But, yes, there are several instances of zones. The only place that I can think of that's one instance is Cyrodiil but I guess you could argue each campaign is a separate "instance".

Supposedly when an area is heavily populated the megaserver creates multiple instances so that there aren't 5000 people at once in the Daggerfall bank. See this: elderscrollsonline.info/mega-server

interresting info, once it happened to me, that I joined a group and I got a system message, that the group is in other version of Grahtwood (AD), that my character, if I want to port to them. I choose yes of course. but I was wondering, what kind of "other version of Grahtwood".... so now I know...thank you :)!

That also happens when you are on different stages of a quest that affects the structure or population of a quest hub in a zone… your buddy goes bye bye.

Was super crazy early on for sure.
