Hey everyone.
My guild has been working on figuring out the scoring mechanisms for the Trials in the game and a while ago we figured it out and it's time to release them.
The main thing to note is that for all 12-man Trials the score is based on two things; NPCs killed and time taken. Each NPC in the Trial is worth a set amount of points such as 100 for "small" mobs, 500 for "medium" mobs, 750 for "big" mobs, 2,500 for some bosses and 15,000 for the last boss. These numbers vary with each Trial and each mob so I won't list them all here but there's easily figured out.
Each Trial has a "recommended" time to complete that ZOS decided on. Anything faster than this means your final score will be higher than your points and anything slower means your final score will be lower than your points. Just a quick thing to say is that ZOS themselves do all the calculations for timing in milliseconds for better granularity, I chose to do it all in seconds instead for ease of use and less conversion issues for people but this means some scores may be out by +- 25 or so, don't worry, it's just the fact that milliseconds aren't being counted.
Finally, the basic formula for each Trial is the same. The points you earn are calculated and then that number of points gets added to by a number that is your points multiplied by a time modifier. The faster you go, the higher your score. Now, let's get started.
Aetherian Archive:
Final Score = (Points + ((Points * (900 - Time in Seconds))/10000))
In Aetherian Archive the maximum earnable points from killing all NPCs is 73,000 and you get a 40,000 point bonus for activating and completing the final boss on hard mode for a maximum possible points number of 113,000. Once you are killing all mobs and doing hard mode then the
only thing that matters is your time. To get a higher score you must go faster, it really is that simple.
The recommended time for AA is 900 seconds (15 minutes).
As an example a run I have a video of had a score of 113,000 points and was completed in a time of 6 minutes and 39 seconds (399 seconds) and the final score was 118,664. If we plug those numbers in to the formula we get a score of of 118,661 which is pretty darn close.
Hel Ra Citadel:
Final Score = (Points + ((Points * (900 - Time in Seconds))/10000))
As you can see this scoring formula is identical to Aetherian Archive. The only difference is the maximum score. The maximum earnable score from killing all NPCs in Hel Ra Citadel is 69,300 plus 40,000 for the hard mode completion which brings the maximum total points to 109,300.
The recommended time for AA is 900 seconds (15 minutes).
As an example I have a video of our world record HRC run which had a score of 109,300 points, a time of 5 minutes and 55 seconds (355 seconds) and the final score was 115,256. Plug these numbers into the formula and you get a score of 115,256 which ought to be close enough for anyone!

.
Sanctum Ophidia:
Final Score = (Points + ((Points * (1500 - Time in Seconds))/10000))
In Sanctum Ophidia, like all Craglorn 12-man Trials, the scoring is essentially the same. However the major difference is that there is a large difference in recommended time due to the increased difficulty in Sanctum Ophidia.
The maximum earnable points for killing all NPCs is 101,750 plus 40,000 for the hard mode completion which brings a maximum total points of 140,750.
The recommended time for SO is 1,500 seconds (25 minutes).
As an example the last Sanctum Ophidia run I have recorded had a maximum points score of 140,750 and it was done in a time of 11 minutes and 48 seconds (708 seconds) with a score of 151,895. If we plug those numbers into the formula we get a score of 151,897.
Veteran Dragonstar Arena:
Final Score = (Points + ((Points * (3600 - Time in Seconds))/10000))
Now Veteran Dragonstar Arena is slightly different. In this Trial the amount of mobs is fixed so you have to kill them all anyway, which leads to a differing scoring mechanism (albeit with the same formula). In Veteran Dragonstar Arena you are awarded 2,000 points for a successful completion of each arena and the highest number of points possible is 20,500. Where this 500 comes from I am unsure but it always seems to be there at the end when you kill the last boss.
Due to this scoring mechanism the
only thing that matters in Veteran Dragonstar Arena is time. The faster you go, the higher your final score will be so focus on killing mobs as fast and efficiently as possible.
The recommended time for vDSA is 3,600 seconds (60 minutes).
As an example, a run I found on YouTube had a points number of 20,500, a time of 1 hour, 41 minutes and 17 seconds and their final score was 15,298. If we plug that into the formula we get a score of 15,299.
Veteran Maelstrom Arena:
Final Score = (270,000 + ((168 - Sigils Used)*750) + ((270,000 + ((168 - Sigils Used)*750) * ((5400 - Time in Seconds)/10000)))
As you can see at first glance the scoring mechanism for Veteran Maelstrom Arena is a bit different to the others but fundamentally it's the same principle. As opposed to the other Trials having a maximum possible points Veteran Maelstrom Arena has a
minimum possible points of 270,000. In Veteran Maelstrom Arena you are given a score of 30,000 points per arena you complete and then at the end of each stage in each arena you are given a score based upon how many sigils you did
not use with each sigil being worth 750 points.
To make an example, the first arena has four rounds, each with four sigils. Assuming you use zero sigils then the first round you will score 3,000 points (750 * 4), the second round will score 3,000 points, the third round 3,000 points again and the fourth round 3,000 points once more for a total of 12,000 points. Then you have completed that arena and get the completion bonus of 30,000 for a total for 42,000 points scored.
So, each sigil you take reduces your points scored by 750, with a little bit of maths you can figure out that a sigil is worth
roughly 30 seconds of scoring time, so if taking a sigil makes you complete the arena faster by more than 30 seconds it is
better to take the sigil as your final score will work out higher.
However, there is an issue with Veteran Maelstrom Arena scoring. When you finish the arena you get your 15,000 points awarded twice as is usual but you get
deducted 15,000 points for some odd reason.
@ZOS_Finn chimed in on this and if I recall correctly said it was due to a different iteration of the arena having ten arenas in total. If he could chime in again to correct me that'd be great. However everyone gets this deduction so it doesn't affect anything in terms of leaderboards and the formula above gives the score
before deductions.
For example, I have a run recorded which was done in 1 hour, 30 minutes and 20 seconds (5,420 seconds) with 14 sigils used in total which gave me a final score of 369,759. If we plug these values into the formula we get a score of 384,729 which at first glance seems wrong, however if we deduct the 15,000 value we get 369,729 which is essentially the given final score.
So, that's the end of this post! I hope you found it interesting and that it helps you with your Trials adventures. If you feel that these numbers are a bit annoying to calculate each time I do have
a Google Docs spreadsheet you can see by clicking here where you can plug the numbers in for yourselves on Sheet 2 and Sheet 3.
Thanks to
@ZOS_Finn, my friends and everyone in Hodor for helping me figure this out.
