You have teased the ability for our characters to wear capes/cloaks since beta...so whats the eta on when they will hit live?

At this point, even if they are only cosmetic, something is better nothing tbh...

No they aren't, and it's to do with the physics engine. They would only add to the lag as they wouldn't be like they are in WoW etc. And tbh, Cloaks and Capes have never been a real part of any ES title ever, save for mods. So no cloaks and capes is good with me.

Look at how badly they do armor. Floating shoulders and floating hip flaps abound. If they can't even get that right and eliminate it I shudder to think what cloaks and capes would end up looking like.

So remove them from the ESO cover and problem is solved, leaving it there with no intensions of adding them to the game is just false advertising....

They were there in very, very early screenshots of the game.

I agree that they should stop having them in advertising etc, but by that logic cinematic game trailers shouldn't be a thing. Because the game looks nothing like them. (Not being funny here) the cinematic ESO trailers are nothing like the game at all! But goodness I do enjoy them. I got distracted. Where was I?

Ah yes I do agree they should be taken off promo stuff as they'll never come to live.

The last official word we have it still "too much lag to make it -right- and we hate clipping and cloaks/capes that look like a backflap (juuuust like the one on the lich for example  ) , so we don't make it at all."

Personally I can understand that point of view...

Though I'd love to see a "back" equipment slot added. Not just for cloaks and capes... but also for back banners, "winged hussar" feather adornments, oversized backpacks, etc.
Not that its a big thing, but...

Well, there WERE capes present in the Official Gameplay Trailer, shown in the below screenshots:

They're also at 2:26 and 9:00 in the actual YouTube video if you are interested:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlEipFtHw7o

So it's not like ZoS disregarded it, they perhaps implemented it at first but got feedback that players didn't like it, or the capes were too faulty or may even be planned to come out in future content. I would say not to ignore the capes for the time being and wait for/if a ZoS employee talks about it in the future.

Are cloaks lore friendly? I don't recall there being cloaks in any TES game before...

Yes, they are. The cloaks/capes are a fairly obvious invention for any people that is able to work with textiles and need some sort of protection from the cold/rain/sandstorms/whatever.

Both Arena and Daggerfall featured capes and cloaks on some characters:

    Elder-Scrolls-II-Daggerfall.png

    gfs_50109_2_2.jpg

Cloaks and Capes "disappeared" from most games on the "early days of fully 3D rendering" because it was too difficult to make a good looking cape. Just look at how many games from these "early" days gave up on cloaks; Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights; Dungeon Siege...

The ones who tried made absolutely ugly capes, like modded NWN capes, WoW capes, etc...

Due to 'habit' and more technological complications, the following Elder Scrolls games had no capes as well, but they were always featured on artworks and such from the series...

So, please... I understand the graphical and stability issues that proper capes would bring. But don't come with the lore argument because saying that one of the most common pieces of clothing throughout History and different places of the world wouldn't be lore-friendly on a setting that draws a lot from our own world is simply absurd.

Other than that, keep beating the horse, mates. I do want to see well made, realistic, linen/fur cloaks in the game one day :disagree:

With the Havok engine... they could just use the Havok cloth plug-in. Very little work on their part.

Here's a tech demo from six years ago... I repeat SIX YEARS ago.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtyIjRD6lAw

Notice how the cloth changes color? That's because Havok Cloth has variable cloth resolutions. Meaning that cloth close to you can flow realistically and dynamically while cloth father away can be more static.

What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.

Heck, they can't even deal with the Guild Tabards on the beast races.
Ever seen one on a Khajiit or Argonian? It's simply cut off on the back to avoid the tail.

Yeh, I'll go with their story on not being able to make them right if they can't even do it on Tabards.

Lag is a pretty lame excuse... more like they don't know how to make them good / lazy.... (I'd go for the they don't know how to do it.)

A game from 2001 can make capes look good in an MMO... I'm sure with the technology and knowledge a 2014 MMO can do it even better and more resourceful.

Eso is really different than other Tes titles so they shouldnt be afraid to add more stuff when they already have.

Just to debunk any speculation, we do not currently have plans to add capes or cloaks into the game. The items datamined above are just extremely old items before the game was released that were never fully removed from the database (but they will be in a future patch now!). Sorry to burst any bubbles. :(
