Newbie Cannot figure out Cyrodil

So I reached level 10 for the first time.

I am a newbie to ESO and to this sort of thing in general.

I got the invite to Cyrodil; and I went.

And what it is -- is -- you talk to one guy and he refers you to another guy. You talk to him, and he refers you to another NPC at the opposite wayshrine. You go through the wayshrine and talk to that NPC, and THEY send you back to the starting point -- except that at the starting point, the arrow still points at the first guy you talked to, and there's nothing to indicate where to go next.

And about here I'm going: WTF? What is all this about anyhow?

I should add that I've never played any PVP game and not even sure I want to -- just TRYING this to see it it's you know, anything.

Right now, my reaction is, it's NOT anything and I should just get the hell out of this place.

The thing is, I don't know what I'm doing, and there's nothing in the game that I can see but this repeating loop that says "Go to the East Shrine!" and then "Go to the West Shrine!" and then "Go to the East Shrine!" and then "Go to the West Shrine!" and then "Go to the East Shrine!" and then "Go to the West Shrine!" and then "Go to the East Shrine!" and then "Go to the West Shrine!" and then .....

Spare me the insults, I know I'm a moron. Just someone point me in the right direction to make some sense out of this god damn thing.

After doing that initial quest 1,000 times I still get confused, so don't worry, it's not just you. I'd rather just have the starting dude hand you a leaflet with all the information so you can read it at your own leisure or something, or destroy it.
If you're a PVP newbie, the best thing you can do is type "lfg" in zone chat to try and find a group to go along with while you learn the ropes.
Alternatively, go PuG style and check your map, look for any of your keeps under attack and follow people around. The more offensive side is to see what keeps your alliance is currently attacking. Look on your map for enemy keeps under attack, put your cursor over it and see if there's any friendly siege there.
You'll often see crossed sword icons on your map which signifies a battle in that area which is helpful also.
Though like I said, best option is to just find a group. Let them know you're new and stay close to the crown (group leader).

I know it's daunting in the beginning, but you'll grow to love it, just like I did

Yes. Go back to the northern or southern points where you first entered cyrodiil and use the wayshrine (NOT the transit shrine). You can transport to any wayshrine in Tamriel from there that you've discovered.

Sounds like a bugged quest is all, certainly not representative of cyrodiil as a whole. Cyrodiil is about players fighting players for keeps, not players running around doing quests. Not sure what quest you are stuck on but if it's one of the initial ones you have to go visit the training ground which is probably somewhere just outside one of your starting gates, depending on faction. Here they show you how to use a siege weapon then give you a skill point.

If you actually want to pvp then I suggest you wait till lvl15 when you unlock weapon swap, then join blackwater blade and type 'lfg' in zone chat. Follow your group, copy what they do, heal them if you can, repair holes in keep walls with repair kits you buy from a siege merchant. You'll pick it up in no time.

What's the benefit of anyone that's not V16 going to Cyrodil? They're just going to get destroyed by a group if they wander off and try to explore.

I checked out the area, went to the sewers. Went to IC and quickly got one shotted by a V16 mob.

Seems like this is strictly end game content and not for anyone without a guild (which requires constant activity to stay relevant or get anything done) and isn't V16.

yeah, if you are a new player don't go to IC alone. the mobs hit like a truck. however, checking out Cyrodiil is not a bad idea but again, find a group.

Thanks for the replies, but most of all thanks for being nice about it. As a newcomer to the whole PvP thing, my perception of it is "More Experienced Players than You beat the crap out of you and take all your stuff." -- that smacks of bullying and I got enough of that in the real world.

So, it's good to know that as I push deeper into this thing, I won't just meet up with jerks.

ScarecrowBoat -- what Alucardo said is exactly right. I figured it out eventually, but it wasn't "intuitive" ... who figured there would be two kinds of wayshrines?

I'll follow everyone's suggestions about zone chat, but I think FriedEggSandwich is right in that I ought to wait a while and do it at a higher level.

I love the game and really just want to go everywhere and see everything that it has to offer. It's probably a good thing that ESO has areas that are geared to different levels and types of players, but I sense that I am out of my depth in Cyrodil. A bit like wandering into a level 20 zone when I am still level two....

Orisinium may be the way to go. It's outstanding DLC and a ton of content to explore solo. Plus if you want to get your group fix in, you can do the dungeon group finder and get good rewards until you get to a higher level for Cyrodil.

With battle leveling, your level 10 will have higher stats than most V14 players.
You'll die a lot when you're new to Cyrodiil (and even when you're not xD) but there's really no penalty for death in pvp, they can't take your things and your gear won't lose durability to pvp deaths, so forget the starting quests and run around exploring.
As someone else mentioned, you can identify action spots on your map by looking for keeps under attack and crossed swords, but the best way to learn is to join a group. LFG in zone might get you one, otherwise, many groups that pick up non-guildies will advertise in zone chat, so you can join one of those.

@ZOS_GinaBruno I think @ProfesseurFreder has some valid points about the confusion that is entering ( and exiting for that matter) cyrodill.

I feel like there should be an npc that tells you in plain English this is how to exit, this is how to use transit shrines.

Best part of the game IMHO, if you approach it the right way...

- get a horse/mount (trust me)
- Select a campaign that is NON VET (don't take a lvl 10 into a vet campaign).
- Select a "balanced" campaign in terms of the participants per faction (equal amounts of players per faction).
- don't sweat gear, or stats, battle level will make you roughly equal.
- transport/rise to one of your factions forts that's about to be under siege (look for siege equip when you highlight the fort)
- get there and use yer mic/keyboard to get in a group
- stick with yer group, have fun while learning the ins and outs.

Zerging for yer own protection.

It seems that most players instead think making the same tired old jokes at new players' expense and confusing them at the same time is really funny.

Take yourself to the non vet camp or go level your toon a bit... Come back when you have developed zen- like patience, obtained blood pressure medication, become to some degree a masochist (like most of cyrodiilic residents), or (like the remainder of aforementioned residents) develop a steely will for optimism like a Jewish mother anxiously waiting for a grandchild that may never come for zos to work everything out.

Cyrodiil will be where you have your most fun in this game....conversely it will also be the bane to your fists and drywall, before using a way shrine.. Get used to this emotional roller coaster, get used to friends you make along the way coming and going quicker than a sheet change at a your local brothel, and learn by failure... Not by nerfbat.

Keep at it and you'll go from victim in a 1vx video to victim of a gap closer train.
Seriously, don't give up though, there are people who need the gold you don't make, selling pots in guild stores.

in cyrodiil they don't take anything from you at all but they do gain AP they can only take stuff from you in IC areas. my best advice is to practice with things like siege weapons in your safe areas. the siege merchant has one that you can buy for gold so practice with that as you are going to need to learn how they work. Also if you have a friend especially one in a different alliance who is willing to teach it is best to ask them for help. I bolded the different alliance part because there are many things that can only be learned through example and you can only see many aspects of PvP when you are actually facing off against an enemy it is better to have a friendly duel in this case.

Change home campaign to Blackwater Blade. It's (hopefully) easier to learn there than on the vet-campaigns. At least on PC EU, anyway. I think the regulars there have more patience to teach new players than the regulars on vet-campaigns. I could be wrong, though.

Cyrodiil has a crazy steep learning curve and little to offer help to newcomers. Thankfully, this game has some lovely people who will gladly help out anyone with questions in Cyrodiil. Ask away and let the players do what ZOS does not.

Press 'L' (by default) to open Alliance War menu. Choose from the list of campaigns on the left hand side and then double click what comes up on the right on the black box. In a few seconds (if there is no queue) you will be asked to confirm you want to enter Cyrodiil Campaign (press 'F' by default) which will expire after 60 seconds if you don't confirm. Once you confirm you will be prompted to press 'E' to teleport to one of the two start points in Cyrodiil for your faction.
