I wouldn't buy this game from steam. I would buy from any other place that sells a key that you add to your account via the elderscrollsonline account management. Why? Because steam discussions is full of how many problems the steam overlay causes with the patcher/launcher of ESO.

If you look around Google, you will find this game cheap on a digital service platform.

The PC version doesn't *have* to use Steam. You can buy it from a physical store, ElderScrollsOnline.com directly or on Steam if you prefer that method.

I'm not sure if the 25$ price will apply to all vendors. (may want to check around, but I think buying it directly from ZOS on ESO's site is the best route)

As a current Steam user, who bought the game from the Steam Store, I'd advise that you don't buy it from Steam. There are far too many issues with Steam and the launcher that would need to be addressed before I would recommend it. If you can get it for cheap from Steam, buy it but download from the ESO Account site NOT from the Steam Client.

Heed my advice, You've been warned!

    A Disappointed Steam User

People who have not purchased the game can get a "free" key to allow for play during the free weekend. This key will allow for the download of the client and access during the "open house".

I haven't had any of the issues with the game that Steam users complain about (other than the fact that you can't back it up, but I have an old backup of just the steam files anyway), so it's a hit/miss thing. The overlay is one of the main reasons I got it through Steam, and it works fine.
I have departed into the great unknown that is outside the game and the forums, and wish you well in your Tamriel adventures!

I have it on steam and never even heard of any issue of the overlay ._.'

..Oh well, anyway you can buy it from any source, really, Steam, the website, any actual store that sells a key/physical copy, etc. As long as you link the purchased key with an account you made in the website, you're good to go.

To be honest, I haven't had any issues with Steam either. I do frequent the Steam forums and try, mostly fail, to help a lot of Steam users solve the issues they have, and there are many. Mostly, the only solution to a majority of the issues is to not use the Steam overlay to open the launcher.

One common problem is, whenever new users buy the game and run into issues they try to Verify Game Cache using Steam. That is a bad idea, after downloading patches, as it will erase the entire file and redownload from scratch. Backing up the game if you've already downloaded the patches does the same thing. Steam only backs up the base game without patches but will save you a hefty download so IS worth doing if you're one of the lucky people that are able to get Steam and ESO to work together. If not then don't bother.

I don't open the launcher through Steam anymore out of spite but it does still work fine for me on two different computers, both with Win 10. I used Steam, mostly, to keep track of game time and I found an addon for that so I no longer need to use Steam. https://www.eso-database.com keeps track of game time and more if anyone is interested.
