Zenimax, please give us your official statement on the matter

For the longest time console players have been requesting Text Chat and want it super badly, yet for the longest time they were never told why. Sure at some point this was probably explained but I think what the console community is dying to know is this: Is there any firm, particular reason it cannot be added? If not, can they expect it in the future? I did use some Master Summoning Materia as well but it was blocked so I will use small summons instead:

It's ridiculous there is no text chat on console. I've said it a dozen times on the forums, DCUO is five years old in Janauary running on a last gen console (PS3) built on a ten year old game engine (Unreal 3, I believe) and it runs a fairly flawless text chat system.

Because of forum rules of conduct I can't say what I think about the person who deicded to scrap this feature in order to probabaly make console launch but I'm not a fan.

I'm especially not a fan when ever console players be it XBOX or PS gets tired of running around asking random people if they can craft a 9 trait Akavaria mace, gets closed down and there are no decent work able options.

Area chat in console is equally as likely as to blow out a 200 dollar set of headphones as it is to listen to someone consuming recreational Narcotics as to screaming profanities at their significant other.

All of these example are sadly part of the MMO experience and mostly tolerable when you have other options, consoles do not and it sucks.

This is my one of biggest gripes with this game it's out teched by a 5 year old last gen game and I have yet to see a response saying.

Short term, long term, or never. If I missed a response it's possible I don't read everything here but I try to keep up with text chat for consoles and haven't seen anything.

Text chat is way up on the totem pole here guys. There are plenty of legitimate issues that ZOS should be fixing besides adding text chat to console.

they do have a text chat pad u can put on your controller so you don't require a keyboard.... atleast on the xbox one

I don't know. Why would you? Your controler can type messages too or your can tirn off text chat and continue to use voice. But seriously, if you don't have any experience with other console mmos you don't know what your are missing. "Looking for group" and trade text chat channels would improve this game immeasurably.

Obvious troll is obvious, I play eso on my pc in the living room, right next to it is my ps4, I sit in the same position and use a controller for both, or is it too hard to fathom the idea of a keyboard just sitting to the side for when you need it?

I've asked in other threads and I would like to know what people want this to look like. What is the pie-in-the-sky version of this must-have implementation? Most threads are threatening and angry, none offer solutions.

The head of the UI Department said, on an ESO Live Stream, that people who play on consoles don't type things into a game, something about being sprawled on a couch and not wanting to deal with a keyboard.

Now, to his credit, most text inputs that use just the controller are cumbersome and clunky. However there are keyboards out there that can be added to the controller, and gamepads that have keyboards built in. So, those may be better for inputing text, but I don't know how well they would be as a game controller.

However, I do think that the console players should have text chat. Playing on the PC with it and playing on the console without it, I can't see how it's better to not have console chat. Now, I do wish the PC folks had Voice Chat at least with Grouping on the PC native to the game. Sure, we can use Team Speak or similar, but that is just something else to run.

The official response was given long ago and clarified months later that no thoughts to change those decisions have occurred.

This times 1000. I'd much rather have less lag or balanced classes or more PvP objectives than text chat. It's a social game. Just turn on your mic. Easy work around. There's no work around for lag.

Eh...what me worry, every time I check, I'm the only one on in the three guilds I'm a member of, so who would I even talk too?

Luckily it's taken me about 4 months to get to Coldharbour....I guess it'll take another four or so to completely clear the other launch zones and move onto Orsinium.

I'll continue to treat ESO as a single player game with some more random than usual NPCs running around.

Anyways.. It may shock you, but Text Chat WAS intended to be in the game..

It may also shock you to know that Text Chat is ALLREADY imbedded inside the console files!! It is just not enabled at this time. So take from that what you will...


But if ESO is actually running live servers in a year from now I promise you it will have Text Chat. This games community is shrinking and without a working group finder and then add in no text chat system ESO will not survive.

No MMO would be able to survive such an environment.

PS: A group of us ran a few test months ago and if you actually plug a keyboard into the USB slot on your Xbox and then start up ESO at least 2 out of 20 starts will prompt this Error code on your screen.

If I recall, the reason given was the same reason that Bungie gave for not putting text chat in Destiny, and the same reason that we have to look at Gamertags instead of Character names.

"Because that is how it is always done on Consoles in other multiplayer games." this, is of course, disregarding FFXI FFXIV, DCUO, Neverwinter, Warframe, and every other game on either console that has Text Chat in it.

the actual reasoning is this: "We believe that Console players are too stupid to know how to plug a keyboard into a USB port, and are so dumb that they'll be easily confused by people playing multiple characters with different names."

with all that said, I DO actually like the Voice Chat we have on consoles. it works splendidly. so much so that I can probably live without ever getting text chat at this point. it won't affect my enjoyment of the game. it's easily the best "built-in" Voice Chat system in any MMO i've ever played.

it's the character name thing that is more insulting to me than the lack of text chat. there is literally no real feasible reason to NOT use Character Names instead of Gamertags.

Honestly I like the Voice/Chat system. I do not agree with it being the only way for people to communicate!

Text Chat would open up the economy and breath life into the trade system.
Text chat would help with grouping and help more people enjoy the game. Group finder has been broken since day one.

Character naming should be in this game I will agree.. I think this is the first MMO in my MMO history "Since Asherons Call and Ever Quest betas to not allow character naming..


ZOS seems to be more interested in gouging we players with DLC's than it is in fixing broken Group finder or adding simple things to increase value with text chat and character naming. It is going on 7 MONTHS now SEVEN MONTHS and still they have not addressed these simple things. ...

It will probably take another MMO to hit consoles that actually have these things that the players want to make ZOS change their stance.. I guess after a few more MMO's come out other than Neverwinter that have a working text chat system , character naming, or a working group finder to hold some developers "Feet to the fire" so to speak over at ZOS to make things happen.

I'm fine with no text chat as a console player.

I've never had a problem buying or selling gear.
I've never had a problem grouping up for undaunted daily's.
I've never had a problem grouping up in cryodill

I would rather see base game improvment's then these kind's of feature's.

I'd rather see:

- Performance Fixes
- Class balance
- More gear variety
- More item's to create a actual market.
- Trail's re-made to fit v16 with v16 item's.
- Stuff to spend AP on... not motif's. I wanna see v16 gear.

I'd much rather wait for these ^, then get text chat.

I just don't understand how ZOS can edit the original post clearly they read what was posted but not reply at all. I play on PS4 and I have been in numerous guilds all empty chats, posted on this forum in the guild section trying to find an active guild and got one hit but it was for the wrong faction.

So tell me how I am suppose to complete anything without text? We have a few 12 man dungeons I haven't been able to even try so how fair is this to me? If I had text chat I am sure I could put together a group.

Trying to do undaunted daily missions is becoming harder as well. Less and less people there everyday. So again why not just add text chat (keep voice chat) and everyone will be happy it is simple logic......

This game will be dead soon I keep seeing people post here and others not even wasting their time posting here and just straight up quitting the game. Every MMO should have text chat! Communication, Grouping and Trading work flawlessly with it, regardless on if you play PC or Console. voice chat is great for dungeons and trials but besides that it's horrible. With voice being the only way to communicate cities normally consist of babies crying, people blaring music and the odd kid getting in trouble. I've been out questing and had some dude shoot freaking right past me on a horse blaring some rap song...It's [snip].

It's a key feature and needs ENABLED in my opinion, because currently there is no real social aspect to the game. Whoever thought it was a great idea DISABLING it should really consider there decision...It's an MMO!

I'm still baffled at how people can defend NOT having Text Chat or how the game is fine without it.

Zenimaxs excuse is pretty poor. Its like saying "we will remove RPM meters in cars because not everyone drag races. Its cumbersome to look at a dial on the dashboard when driving"

Text chat for LFG, trading etc. Voice chat for formed groups. Who would type during a vet dungeon encounter? Their excuse is quite poor.

Also typing with the controller is as bad as they think.

Still not a good enoigh reason to withhold Text Chat.

The fact there is no text chat on console is ridiculous and is the main reason I plan on canceling my sub and leaving this otherwise great game very soon. My main is vet 16 and I've only two zones left before I complete gold. I am growing very tired of questing.

Most of my friends have already left the game because of the lack of BASIC mmo features such as DPS meters/numbers and text chat. The few that remain don't play much and are no where near my level. I love the game and would glady keep playing (and paying a sub!) If I could find people to play with. I just want to do dungeons, trials, dsa, daily pledges....

I refuse to stand in a public place spamming on voice for a group, and your group finder SUCKS. Not to mention that there isn't even the option to use your terrible group finder for things like trials and dsa... Please ZOS, get your head out of your arse. Before it's too late. WE. NEED. TEXT. CHAT.
