I'm not even sure really. I don't have any big goals, and my aspirations cost very little or nothing, and I'm easily content.

I'd spend *a lot* more time writing addons for sure ...

Based on the 50K a year, I'd really set a bunch aside for retirement (not in 401K) too.

50k a year is about the US median yearly wage before taxes. That's good in low cost of living states but just ok in high cost of living states. I think I'd mainly use it to live off and save, while pursuing work interests with more vigor.

I would start this business/project I have been planing for a while, quit playing games, quit boring job and basically start working 3 times as much.

Honestly this sounds like a better option than downsizing work to 50%. Depending on how old you are, a mil may not last you a lifetime if you make less money. the smart thing is to use it in a way where you make more money off of it from smart business, etc.

I have researched and had my plan for years, so I'm ready for the win now, thanks.

That rather depends on your age. At 50+ even allowing for inflation 50k year sounds like uit my job time.

I can see your point. However, 50k per year will go a shorter distance a decade from now. You also will have a tax on the winnings of at least 25-30% of it. If you should need some medical or long term care it will not come close to covering it. At that age the best thing might be a fixed index annuity for 2-300k of it. Something with a strategy that will return 150-200k more during the first 10 year period.

True, but to be somewhat morbid in 10-20 years I'll have probably come into my inheritence (so much money tied up in property nowadays). Also living in the UK and actually having a decent Health Service takes some of the worry out of old age.

Getting married next year, so I'd throw an even bigger bash.

Also start a baby fund. Probably get a bigger house.

Also my BMW could use some more horsepower.

I would call up Dave Ramsey to help set up my winnings properly. Then say my prayer to the Lord for allowing me to win this, and give to my church. Then stay home to help my wife with her MS.

I would get a better computer, move to a place far away from my insane family, maybe Japan or Germany, go back to college, maybe buy an Ocelot and spoil my fiancé with any video game or gadget he'd ever want. Oh ya and lots of pizza. And Hello Kitty stuff.

I was going to say I'd sell my condo and buy a nice house... But realistically, the math doesn't work.

The first installment is 50K. Assuming I sold my condo, paid off the mortgage, and added the remainder to that first installment, that would leave me with roughly 120K to use as a down payment.

Using that as my 20% down payment (if I go below 20% I'd have to pay thousands on high ratio insurance, which can end up costing tens of thousands over the life of the mortgage) gives me a purchase price of $600K.

The median house price for a single-family detached home around here is roughly $1.2 million. With only a $600K purchase price I can buy an uninhabitable tear-down in a crappy neighborhood (if I'm lucky - a more realistic price for that would be closer to $750K), or I can buy a decent place that's a 1+ hour commute from the city.

So I guess I'd maybe sell my condo and buy a somewhat better condo?

Of course, where winning would be really nice is that it would allow me to put a significant lump sum payment down on my mortgage each year. I'd probably earmark about half of it for that.

If the OP is referring to the ESO $50/year over 20 years, I would probably not do much different. After taxes (and the resulting increase to my wife's income-based student loan repayment), I would imagine that I would received maybe 30k a year from the winnings -- far from life changing.

    Maybe I'd get ESO Plus.
