I heard getting gear becomes increasingly grindy with each DLC, therefore I guess it is time to introduce some means for the better people to conveniently pave their way to epic gear with dollars. I am not saying there should be gear the crown store. That would be pay to win, which is bad, right? But there could be mats packs or other components from which once could assemble gear by himself. That could be enough to fool P2W alarmists that no gear for cash scheme is underway.

I'd still be against it. I really don't want to let ZOS to think of it as ok to implement a gear grind in the game just because they put an 'alternate' method of obtaining it in the crown store. Really don't want to reinforce that grind mentality.
I also dislike the idea of gear being supplied in any form in the cash shop. Yes, yes, I know you said mats. But really, its just gear in an extra step.

[Pay money-->Get crown store mats---> craft gear with said mats] is still essentially equivalent to [Pay Money-->Get Gear] as far as i'm concerned. And of the high quality stuff, no less. I vote no for crown store mats/gear.

Yeah, it is, but people have not yet discovered it. It is the same as with pay money -> exp scroll -> more exp, therefore money -> exp, which is working fine, that intermediate step does the trick.

That could be enough to fool P2W alarmists that no gear for cash scheme is underway.

They probably won't jump this far... yet. They have been "testing the waters" with crown store items, seeing what they can get away with by pushing the P2W envelope. Let's review:

    - It started out with only purely cosmetic items: mounts, pets, costumes. Definitely not P2W at all.

    - Then they added motifs. Still cosmetic, but since they could be obtained in game as well, by finding them or paying for them at a guild trader, a very weak argument could be made that they are "slightly" closer to the P2W side than the first group. By purchasing them from the crown stare, you save the gold needed to buy them in-game (or the time taken to farm them) and can potentially use them to make money by selling rare-appearance gear to others that can't make it. Still not P2W by most standards, but a small step in that direction.

    - Consumables were also added. Getting a little closer, for much of the same reasons as the motifs. When you can choose to obtain something with either real money or in-game money (or time spent farming), that's the very definition of P2W. In this case, since it only applied to something as mundane as potions and xp boost scrolls (not end-game gear and such), it was generally still accepted as not being P2W.

    - Next was the horse training. This is where I think we start getting closer. You can now out-right buy upgrades that would otherwise take you months to get normally. This is the typical P2W approach of putting in a time-sink, and then allowing a bypass with real money. But again, since it only affects mount speed and pack space, it could still be argued (though slightly more difficultly now) that is was not really P2W.

    - Bag and Bank space. Just like horse training, but instead of bypassing a time-sink, you are bypassing an in-game gold cost.

So as you can see, each update to the crown store adds items that are getting incrementally closer to P2W. Whether they have actually crossed the threshold into P2W is arguable, but they are playing it safe enough that the majority of people would probably still let this stuff slide. But they have definitely ventured into the "gray area" of P2W.

I wouldn't expect to see them going all the way to "epic gear with dollars" anytime soon, but I would expect them to continue to push toward that goal, to see how far they can go before people really start to scream "P2W!" at them.

I'm thinking a next logical step will be something like "instant research" tokens that allow you to instantly research one crafting trait. Something that's one increment closer to P2W, but still arguably "not that bad" yet.

Ah, yes, that would be very convenient. A brand new, OP trait that would otherwise take ages to research could follow a few weeks later.

I think ZOS would be better off enhancing the value of the subscription for revenue, then adding basic items to the Crown Store over time (in addition to the DLC). Subscription incentives will matter more long term.

Forget about long term. Whales need to be milked while they are here. They could set eyes on some new, shiny thing and swim away at any moment with all their money! And while they can spend any arbitrary amount of money in th cash shop, they can not stack subscriptions. Oh, wait! I got an idea!

    I'm hoping for these two.

Players want stupid amounts of gold for these right now, and I do not see the price coming down anytime soon. It is cheaper and easier to pay for these in Crowns than it is to have to go out of my way doing something I don't like to grind out the over 2 million gold needed to buy all pieces for both of those motifs right now.
