As a mtg player, I cant believe how many nouns, terms, and phrases that game shares with ESO. Honestly I'm surprised Disney/Hasbro hasn't filed suit. Its a disturbing amount of terms and themes borrowed. I know they dont have a monopoly on fantasy concepts but I feel like I'm playing MtG the video game.

Elder Scrolls: Arena came out in 1994, a year after Magic the gathering came.

Funnily enough, a friend was showing me some cards today and I pointed out how one card looked like a Skyrim Dragon Priest, and another a Dwemer Construct.

I do believe there are elements of shared inspiration. MTG developers play ESO, and ESO developers play MTG. And it is even evident among the community as well, as I believe references to "stacking" abilities came directly from MTG concept of "putting a spell on the stack" and many rules questions essentially asking "does X and Y stack?"

References to stacking has been in all game communities that I have been in. It's just the appropriate term. I'm an engineer and we even use the term stacking in reference to our design concepts. Mtg did not invent the term, or the usage in games.

Funnily enough Magic the Gathering founders borrowed many of its aspects from other areas; television, books, comic strips, comic books, and other art clearly inspired many of the starting cards. So even though people may borrow from Magic the Gathering in the crafting of their own stories, those that made magic the gathering did the same thing, and many people have copied tropes that are as old as Beowulf or the earliest religious texts.

In conclusion here are some "play test" cards that were used to test Magic the Gathering. Notice anything that you are familiar with? Let's not overreact to the borrowing of ideas. It isn't the end of the world when people innovate already existing things, it is impossible to make something 100% unique, and it should be a bit frightening to live in a world were everything is a form of "intellectual property" that is shared with risk of lawsuit.

all lore is inspired in nordic medieval stories, and some of the game developers have tweaked them in very artistic manners where others have failed
