Spell Crafting may have this, but honestly, if they keep the class skills, I really don't want anything to do with it.

Every single Elder Scrolls game up to Online had similar yet differing features. TESO is not "required" to have what past titles did.

As for the schools Nightblades tend to hold more Illusion magic whereas Alteration and Conjuration are more along the lines of Sorcerers. Magelight is easily accessible by anyone though so there's some more Alteration for ya.

Because this is an MMO not a single player game. You have to try to have balance here, no god mode. PVP, Group play, Solo play all have to be taken into account.
Think about what would happen if everyone could just choose all the "best" skills regardless of class and there were no downsides.

The difference between MMOs and single player games is, in MMOs they need to add mechanics to prevent everyone and their dog ending up playing the same "super-effective" build, since that would leech the joy out of PvP for a great many people.
Which is why they usually divide all the goodies into "classes".

ESO is doing much better at this then many other games, in that they at least leave the weapons and armor freely choosable, instead of making the classic "tank class... ranged dps class... melee dps class... healer class" without any chance for the players to break out from the class pigeonholeing. Makes for more options to try, makes for more fun to play.

But if they had done the same with the skills... people would end up cherry picking too much. Nightblade stealth combined with sorceror shield and templar heal? You know they would...

WTB Alteration so I can cast Detect Life/Detect death to see all those damned nightblades stealthing around out there.

Actually, skill lines for spells started in Daggerfall. Though "Conjuration" was not considered one of them. Daggerfall had Alteration, Destruction, Illusion, Mysticism, Restoration, and Thaumaturgy.

Really hope we will see those with Spellcrafting. Sadly we have no timeline for that at all, could be part of any upcoming DLC.

What's this got to do with magic schools?
Besides, most skills are already available to everyone. Classes are evidently not necessary for balance.
