Maintenance for the week of January 5:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – January 5
• NA megaservers for maintenance – January 7, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EST (15:00 UTC)
• EU megaservers for maintenance – January 7, 4:00AM EST (9:00 UTC) - 10:00AM EST (15:00 UTC)

Distributing patch during maintenance

Bracteamentum
I would like to know, why the patch is not getting distributed during maintenance. As I can imagine, the patch will be very large and after the servers are up a lot of players have to first download the content.
It would be more efficiant to let players download the patch.
The game servers do not need to be up for that. The Launcher could get the data from a different source like the own homepage of TESO.
Like me, many players might have let the launcher open to be able to download the patch as soon as it goes online.
Many players could enjoy Orsinium right away after they come home from work, university, UFO abduction, etc.

Because the maintenance is required to actually add the patch in. Can't download what isn't implemented yet.

Problem is they had failed patches before. As in server simply saying no to the new version and they had to revert.
If they push a patch too soon and something goes wrong everyone will have the wrong client; and in worst case would have to re-download the client completely - not sure if their patching mechanism would even support reverse patching.

That being said... yes, I would like a patch "pre-loading" of sorts, too. Especially for huge DLC content.
    I guess everyone would.

As said before, it's not possible to do it that way because the maintenance is them adding the new version to the servers for us to download, it all has to be configured and confirmed running properly before they download it to us otherwise they would have to revert and we would have to download the patch twice, which i'm pretty sure there would be a lot of complaint about.

There would be no version conflict because the server does not let the home client connect to itself until the maintenance process is complete with the new version of the server client. At least I don't see were it could go wrong unless players get the wrong version, which can happen after maintenance too.

Pretty much every other MMO allows patch to be downloaded during maintenance. How is it impossible then?

Or it's impossible for THEM? If so, some changes should be made. Esopecially considering servers are down 3rd time in one week's time. If maintenance times would be localized it would be semi-fine. But considering it's all at the same time, conveniently favoring US TZs, playhers from different timezones feel like they are second-category. Even tho they pay the same. Or more.

How about "costs more than it is worth to do it"??

Other games have this feature, that you can have the patch streaming onto your computer as the patch updates, allowing you to play and update at the same time. Don't know if this is what you are referring to, but sounds like it. I think Rift is one of the games that does that.

Yes, Rift does it (at least it did the short period I played it)

WoW downloads patch PRIOR to it's implementation.

Eve online downloads patch duruing maintanance.

In both cases once servers are back up you just log in and play.

If I remember correctly they don't give you the whole patch early, what they do is give you background patches containing resources such as sound file and such early so that when it comes to the patch day it's quicker to download.

Effect is what matters. You log in once maintetance ends.

It is enough if most of the patch data is pre downloaded so that the amount on release day is not so big anymore.
I can imagine that not many have an internet connection beyond 100 Mbit/s.

Go stand on top of a tall building, and have someone tell you that if you jump off, you will be able to fly.

"Not possible" really should be in your vocabulary, unless you want to make a very brave but ultimately futile gesture of bravado, and end up as a mushy splat on the pavement.

Seriously. Let's not compare jumping off buildings to adding software features and processes.
