Help with quest Simply Misplaced

I am, or was, doing the quest Simply Misplaced. I did everything up to almost the end. Near the end I used the Wabbajack 5 times on the adepts. Then I was to talk to Sheogorath. But the quest indicator said "Enter the Portal" and Sheogorath arrow indicator was not white but black. So I thought I was to go thru the portal and he'd be on the other side to talk to . And to make matters worse I think I went thru the wrong portal And of course he wasn't on the otherside.

And now I can't get back on where I was to finish the quest. Please tell me I didn't royally screw this up?

I don't know how to fix your current situation, but just for future reference: a black quest indicator simply means its not your current (or focused?) quest (unless it's also glowing, then it's one waiting to be picked up). A white indicator shows your current quest. You can set your current quest by pressing T (by default) to cycle through all your active quests (you can also set it in your journal).

I know that one way to correct this would be to abandon the quest and pick it back up from the Mage's Guild (Shalidor I believe). That option would be unfortunate as you were pretty close to the end. The quest my also have been rolled back if you have been logged out for a while (and there is maintenance so I'm assuming you are) and it was in an instance, which I believe it is. You should be able to make sure that the quest is your active quest and follow the quest markers to the point where you can pick up the story line again. You may have to travel to the Mage's Guild and enter whatever portal took you into the quest area. I hope this help.

Just as others said abandon the quest and restart it. Although you'll have to do the quests again as we know you gain your quests as you reach the applicable guild levels by collecting the books, and your level shouldn't go down because you restart the quest. I'm sure though as you have already reached those levels previously you will be able to progress from on quest to the next without collecting books between each quest up to the point you were at. Obviously don't stop collecting the books there are more quests, but you shouldn't need to collect extra just to get where you were.
I don't know how long you will have to wait between quest, but not long. I'm sure if you quest for a while without even finding a book your contact will turn up shortly. Who knows, maybe after each quest just going to another mages guild you'll find your contact straight away.
I'm sure about your mages guild level, and not collecting any more books, so I hope this is a little silver lining. Maybe someone can confirm how long between each quest, which will give you an idea how long you'll have wait for each one. You never know, if someone confirms it as quick as I suggested at least you know you'll be able to fly through the quests with your better equipped higher level character. Who knows it might only roll back that one part of the quest instead of the whole thing, (which is what Autkast was implying I think).

I did know that the black arrow was for the non-active quests, but this quest was active. I guess I'll have to try and abandon the quest. I was really hoping that an Sysop could just plop me back into the area where, I know, he's sitting there waiting for me

That worked!! OMG thank you all so much!! I had no idea you could drop and restart. I've been trying to figure this out for over a week.

Not too much because when I glitched myself, I stopped questing until I heard back from support. But they ever replied was please post on our forums and I didn't know about these forums even. So it took a week to sort that out. So I just ran around trying to find new waypoints and gather jute
