If your going to do an extended maintenance, state so beforehand, the majority will understand
If you Have an issue doing an short maintenance post so and state server time estimated back up the majority will understand
If you have issues beyond your control state so the majority will understand.
What you are doing is causing the majority to not know what going on and they will leave, Do you Understand?
