Does anyone else find some of the in game conversation really condescending towards their character?

It's not a problem so much, but too often it happens on the main questline. For example:
Spinner Maruin says 'Ask nicely' when he wants me to follow his story to change Anna... whatever her name is. How about, no! Tell the bloody story or I'll stab you in the face!

I'm supposed to be a legend helping the poor folk of Tamriel, the least I expect is a little respect and this is not the first time. I've noticed this countless times. Anyone else agree?

No, you aren't the only Vestige, there are thousands of us heroes out there. Don't expect the world to fall at your feet. (And no you aren't going to become guildmaster of the Fighter's Guild or archmage of the Mage's Guild either, you are just another recruit like the rest of us).

You're a nobody, slowly building up esteem in the people's eyes. So, a guy asked you to use your manners? Personally I found most of the dialog from npc's hilarious, especially Raz's.

I really wouldn't mind if I could be rude right back, but too often you have to suck it up with some dialog that is completely out of character to my image of my RPG character.

Not only you, all honorable people in Tamriel deserve a little respect.
Is it possible that you do not want to pay a little respect to the story?

    That's typical Elder Scrolls.

Even in Skyrim, when we were the only one Dovahkiin savior of the world, the universe and everything else, some NPCs talked to us like we were the worst scumbags.
I kinda like that ! :-) These dialogues are fun.

Why should I have manners if they don't? I'm not complaining about the NPC dialog, I'm complaining about 'my' dialog options.

In my experience of other TES games you could give it right back though. Or at least it fitted in the 'story'. You would expect thieves and assassins to be rude. Not some beggar asking for you to save him.

Have an awsome for a great insult. But this is my point, you had a reason to say such a thing. Often in the game it seems out of place.

Such as my example. None of my dialog was rushed or rude. He just asked for my manners out of the blue, as if I was rude or something. Again, I wouldn't mind if it was the consequence of me picking a rude dialog beforehand, but it wasn't.

"You think I'm being smart with you?

    How would YOU know?"

No one can trash the ego like a lady Bosmer.

Would like it if, you know, once you save Tamriel from eternal damnation in the icy fires of Coldharbour, folks could at least recognize that this was accomplished. No need to be gushing with gratitude, but a:

"Thanks for not letting my children get eaten by Ogrims" would be nice. You know, once in a while. :)

Well, the guards that said that to me in Skyrim didn't have a reason. I do like the condescension, and sometimes they actually realized you did something good and will mention it instead.

Some of the comments are extra funny in some circumstances.

What... khajiit got your tongue? I talk back all the time to the screen, the NPCs and even taunt the sweepers in IC. I game with (and am generally on skype with) three other people who do the same thing.

The "game" as presented online is a starting point, not the end of what you can do.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

In a single player a game, maybe this would matter more. But an MMO, too many heroes. Although the main story is solo so...I don't know this game has had some weird decisions sometimes.

I love group play, especially for important things like a main story, this game is way too solo whilst leveling up to max level. People may disagree, but sometimes forcing group content is a good thing. But that's just my perspective, at the very least, the main story should have had the option to group up and definitely have been made more difficult in a group. I mean it's the main story and you fight Molag Bal and all his goons, but it's so easy that there is very little sense of achievement in the end.

Honestly, I'd like to see an alternative version of the Main Story. I guess you could say a Veteran mode, but to be even more honest, I wish it was just like that to begin with lol.

    Well it's a breath mint ... no it's a candy mint ... wait!

    You are BOTH right.

For a really well-thought-out classy series of articles that explore this, go here:

    https://fallingawkwardly.wordpress.com/2010/08/29/the-metaphysics-of-morrowind-part-1/

    For the cheap, quick and dirty answer, keep reading;

In ES lore there is the idea of a Dragonbreak, a .... mushy clump of non-linear time where lots happens, but then after the fact it looks like only a little was done by a few.

ESO takes place (in my head cannon) in a dragonbreak - every single person that is a vestige is contributing (in some way) to the ultimate aim of restoring Nirn. And from their (our) perspective there is more than one of us.

From those "outside" the dragonbreak (which includes most of the NPCs) it looks like "one person" did such and so. As evidenced by the fact that when I group with 12 people in daggerfall, all the NPCs notice is "that hero that saved the king". Simlarly, they never seem to notice the veritable hordes of people mysteriously arriving and vanishing between wayshrines (that apparently just look like "small shrines" to the average NPC).

Along with this, it seems to be only other vestiges that fade in and out of the universe and sometimes fall through it, and see everyone as "black shadows". We/I are weirdly connected to (or maybe disconnected from) Nirn. From our perspective.

    Not from theirs.

That is because some cultures are inherently racist and sexist... but let's not get political.
