Can someone help explain how XP in this skill line is gained please? In regards to fencing stolen items, do you gain experience per item sold Or is the XP based on gold amount obtained while fencing? For example if I fence a green item worth 100 gold, do I get more XP for fencing a blue item worth 250 gold or is it the same XP gained?

Not sure about selling stolen items, not tried the justice system. You do gain XP from opening chests. One of my chars is up to level 4 legermain from chests. Slow way to gain XP? Yes.

Fencing stolen items is much quicker since there really isn't a way to grind chests. You can however grind stealing :). Just wondering if anyone has tracked the exact XP gain

If you were to mouseover the Legerdemain XP bar, you'd see it lists the XP as the total quantity of stolen items. You receive a single xp per stolen item fenced regardless of value.

Ok.. need to... separate something from your topic and question.

XP is gained by opening chests, as another poster said.. HOWEVER, XP does not affect leveling the skill line. Doing theivery things does. Some people have the misconception that you need to be caught to get this skill leveled.

They are wrong. I have gotten caught one time on my characters, fully clothed in stolen gear, so I get the Achievement. My then VR14 hit level 10 pretty quickly. Basically, he stole until his bags were full, without being spotted. (Crouch CONSTANTLY) He went to a Outlaw's Refuge. He sold everything that was not a crafting mat, including racial stones he was overflowing on. He laundered everything that was a crafting mat for him or an alt. If he hit cap on either, he would just hold onto it until the next day. If he was not capped, he went on another crime spree until they were maxed for the day. When he got the level and the skillpoint. he bought the one that gives you "more space to sell to a fence." Then rinse and repeat the next day. No large bounties, no large fees to the fence, only pure profit.
Power level to CP160 in a week:
Where is the end game? You just played it.
Why don't I have 300+ skill points? Because you skipped content along the way.
    Where is new content? Sigh.

This answered my question, thank you semaj. Unfortunately the ps4 does not list the XP like it does on PC so there is no way to track your progress

Opening doors, stealing things from everywhere (!) and opening locked chests, those are ALL things which raise your Legerdemain level.
Beside that, you can kill all kind of "property" pets (sheeps, cows, etc, etc.) and simply collect and sell their loot, which gives Legerdemain Exp.

If you search on youtube, you'll find some good spot guides where you can kill sheeps all day long. The problem is the amount of items you're allowed to sell. So, if you don't like farming, simply farm like 2000-3000 items at once and store the loot, in order to sell that 1xx every day.

Attention with NPCs, as "neutral" NPCs have to be killed in one shot (!!!), so equip a 2h weapon and skill wrecking blow, so you can kill them in one shot. (btw, you learn sth. about skill balance by doing so^^). If you farm "sheep spots", it's easier to kill the NPCs guarding the sheeps, as otherwise you get bounty points.
(Please look for the youtube video --> everything is explained better!)

It's per item fenced/laundered. So grab all those trait stones and lockpicks and launder them and fence everything else.

You just need to know where to go. Though usually a combo of chests and lockboxes is most efficient.

Goblin? Do you mean the goblin polymorph? Is there an advantage to using it while stealing?

    No I hate the polymorph.

I played mostly AD characters at first, and I really enjoyed Toothmaul Gully (and I really enjoyed hating that snotty Priondil or whatever his name is). So I decided I wanted to play a goblin. Worked in the create character screen to get a ... very ugly bosmer as 'gobliny' as I could and I play her as a goblin.

She has a thing for pickpocketing guards (attempting anyway... I lost track of the number of times she's been killed doing that) and a thing for those skull-headed staves.

OK, you get points for various activities like Fencing, Laundering, Opening Chests/Lock Boxes and Picking Pockets. I think for the last two you get more points for the more difficult targets. However, I never used picking pockets or locks to level my characters to max levels in the line.

You get one point for each item you Launder and one point for each item you Fence. Your daily limits apply to each one of these, so you start out with 50 Fence and 50 Launder limits each day or a 100 items each day. The first passive you unlock gives you 110% more so you get to Fence/Launder a total of 220 items each day, so unlock that. I don't think the other levels of the passive are worth spending points on as you only get 10 more items in each category per point.

It does not matter how much gold you get from fencing or how you spend laundering, it is the item count. So, go steal Provisioning Ingredients. They stack so you can carry more and they are everywhere and usually you can find NPC free areas to grab the stuff. You will also find the more expensive loot in these areas too. So, fill up your bags, Launder ingredients until you max that out, Fence what is left and the other loot until you reach your daily limit.

Thanks! Yea I have spent the skill point on a few of my characters to get the 110 fenced/laundered items per day. Very well spent skill point

I found this in another thread:
    • Rank 1 = 40 Points (You can get to Rank 6 pretty easy on Day 1).
    • Each subsequent Rank increases by 20 points.
    • Rank 20 = 420 Points.
    Advancing Legerdemain

    1 Point
    • Pickpocketing an Easy Target.
    • Picking a Simple Door or Chest/Safebox.
    • Laundering items of any quality, White - Purple.
    • Fencing items of any quality, White - Purple.
    • Gaining Achievements under The Justice System section.
    2 Points
    • Pickpocketing a Medium Target.
    • Picking an Intermediate Door or Chest/Safebox.
    4 Points
    • Pickpocketing a Hard Target.
    • Picking an Advanced Door or Chest/Safebox.

    8 Points
    • Picking a Master Chest/Safebox (I haven't found any Master Doors yet).

    How to gain Legerdemain XP:

    1. Pick a lock, doesn't matter where.
    2. Fence and Launder.

Honestly that's usually all I do but I'd imagine Pickpocketing earns you some too. Can't say I've ever seen my meter grow from committing murder though...

I definitely pick any locks that I find, however I've found that the easiest way to gain XP towards Legerdemain is to steal EVERYTHING that you can get your grubby fingers on. Max out stolen items sold and laundered each day. Rinse and repeat until you reach level 20. It's worth investing at least 1 point in the Trafficker Passive skill so that you can fence/launder 120 items each, per day.

It seems to relate to the amount of gold you make from selling stolen goods, but picking pockets seems to increase it faster, just a little risky. You also get it from using treasure maps to find chests.
