"Zones"

1) I keep seeing people chatting and they begin with the word 'Zone'. I have tried talking to them; I have tried answering and no-one seems to reply or take any notice. Is this just plain rudeness or am I missing something here?
I am Level 17; Recruit grade 1 (nothing special yet as you can see).
2) If I whisper to someone then whenever I go back into the chat window I appear to be talking to the same person even if I am miles away. Once a whisper has been done is there any way to revert to the general chat slot rather then the last person whispered to?

Sorry - two questions but am still very much learning.

    1) Chat posts with the word [Zone] are sent in the Zone chat channel, which covers the entire zone you are in. The default chat channel is Say, which only covers the immediate area (and is likely why you have had no replies - the people you are talking to are probably further away than your immediate area). To chat in the Zone channel, type /z. To chat in the Say channel, type /s.

    2) Chat channels will stay as the one most recently used until changed. To change to a different chat channel, use a slash command like /s or /z.

There are details on all the available chat channels, and their access /slash-commands, at UESP.

The chat system is separated into "chat channels". You can switch channels by using certain chat commands. The following channels exist, listed with their respective chat command:
    • Zone: /zone or /z
    • DE-Zone: /dezone or /dez
    • FR-Zone: /frzone or /frz
    • EN-Zone: /enzone or /enz
    • Say: /say or /s
    • Yell: /yell or /y
    • Whisper: /tell <charactername/accountname> or /whisper <charactername/accountname> or /t respectively /w <charactername/accountname>. The second option for whispering with someone is using the player interaction (f-wheel) menu and choosing the "whisper player" option.
    • Guild specific channels (more on that further down)
The difference between the channels is the coverage. All Zone channels are readable in the whole "land" you are in (e.g. Glenumbra or Auridon or Stonefalls) and by everyone in that channel and in that land. Upon logging in, you are by default joining the /zone channel. To enter the language specific zone channels, right-click on the chat-tab and navigate to the "channels displayed" options. You automatically switch to the zone chat for another "land" if you move your char to that other land. Afaik, there is no possibility to chat in the "Glenumbra" zone chat while being in the "stormhaven" zone with your char.

The /say, /yell and /whisper channels are more for direct communication. While the zone chats could be considered as universal telepathy, /say and /yell are more like you speaking respectively yelling in real life. Both can be read by any char from your own faction that is nearby your char, with the only difference being how far they can be away. Generally speaking, though not precise numbers, /say would allow you to be understood by all players on the market place you are at within Wayrest, whereas /yell would allow all players in the complete city of Wayrest to hear you. Duly note that /yell'ing is considered rude similar to all-caps in a forum, if you don't have a real reason for it.

/whisper is a special case, as this needs to be targeted at a certain player and only he will be able to read your text.

In addition to those channels listed above, you do have a chat and an officer chat for every guild you are member of. The commands for those are /guild or /g respectively /officer or /o, combined with the number the guild has in your guild overview (press "g" by default). Thus, if the first guild in your guild overview is "Example Name", you could talk to all guild members of "Example Name", irrespective of the faction they belong to or the region they are in, by typing /guild1 or /g1 before typing your text. The /officer chat is reserved for the guild members that have a special permission from the guild leader, and it follows the same rules as guild chat (for "Example Name" officers, you would have to use /officer1 or /o1)

I have used the respective chat commands in most of the descriptions I have given, and that is also the answer to the second question you posted: To change a channel, open the chat (default: press "enter"), type for example /zone followed by a space and the chat prompt will change to zone.

If you want to whisper a person that has a space in his character name, use the following command:

    /t example character,

(the comma at the end is the secret, it will force the game to register the two- or more part name as target name).

EDIT: Bah, @Enodoc stop being more concise than I am and post before I can :p

Thanks people - that is oh so much clearer. Why can't the 'help' facility give answers like this?

    Really, really appreciated.

Now that, is something I didn't know :)

There's also /group or /party, respectively /g or /p, for your current group. Note that /g (for group) and /g# (where # is a guild number) are different, and could be confusing to start with. [At least, they were to me :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:]

    Gah, missed those, you're right.

And the comma one is also really nice in Cyrodiil, as it lets you whisper players of the opposing faction without knowing their account name (need it even for names without spaces).

Oooohhh... So that's how you whisper other faction players. Thank you!

You're welcome. It will still not work if they are set to "offline" status, though.

Wow. All this time I didn't know the difference between Say, Yell, and Zone.
