Hi Guys,

I'm brand spanking new to the game and have rolled a Altmer Sorcerer as my main character. I'm looking for Magicka DPS (ish) based build which has some survivability built in.

Do you have any advise for the skills and passives I should be looking at, for say the first 20 levels while I'm still learning the ropes?

Thanks in advance.

O.T.

As you're starting out. There isnt much to say. certainly nothing exceptional whilst getting up to level 20. the standard check list looks like this for me:
    • use the first 3 class skills with your first 3 skill points
    • get a destruction staff, and get the first skill
    • morph the first three class skills. all very good pet =tank, crystal= big damage knock down, fury=execute(used on <20% HP targets)
    • get an ultimate (i like overload its fun and unique)
    • get an additional / 2nd class skill ( i like curse or encase as i've already got overload from storm calling skill line)
    • at 15 when you get a second bar get a restoration staff and slot the first skill on bar #2
    • as soon as you can get a horse (save for one 10k iirc)
    • as soon as you can; play some PVP. PVP gives you two skill points very early on for only a little bit of play time/few kills, very useful when you're starting, also gives more skill lines, including a speed boost. faster you go faster you can quest

weapon and class skill lines progress based what is slotted. The rest are based on other things (finding books, killing undead, doing dungeons). So if you look at a skill and think wow i want that. Slot more skills from that skill line. (always keep 1 from each skill line slotted i.m.o.).

If you don't like a skill. wait until you can morph it and see what the morphs do before discarding it.

I know this doesn't help but if your grand spanking new then just have fun testing out the skills etc. There is nothing worse that can take the fun and mystery out of a new game than people telling you what you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT use. Make that decision up for yourself, otherwise you SKIP the being new part and dive straight into the monotonous theory crafting that sucks the essence and crushes the spirit of all games eventually.. but that normally comes after you have played for many a year and the line between game and chore becomes a blur .

Just have fun! Forget about that guy who lives in his mums basesment trying to tell you what is best and his/ her delusions of grandeur towards 'x' spec or 'x' class.

Welcome to ESO I hope you find some answers anyhow.

I am not a sorcerer, but can tell you I get killed with Crystal Fragments and Curse...alot. Also Hardened Ward seems pretty standard
    Wood Elf Stam NB (PVP)
    Redguard Stam Sorc (PVP)
    Altmer NB (DPS)
    Imperial DK (Tank)
    Redguard DK (DPS)
    Altmer Templar (Healer)

I agree with a.skelton92. Experiment and discover your own play style before you try to maximize anything. You can always respec or just start another toon if it's not working out for you.

Most of the sorcerer basic gameplay are in the bottom class skills.

    Run something like

velocious curse, mages fury, frags, a pet or two and use a destro staff for light and heavy attacks.

That's sort of the "basic" magicka dps sorc.
Youll hit really hard, once you get the hang of it, but youll be pretty fragile since youre dressed in a thin layer of silk so you need to play aware and carefully untill you unlock streak.

That's standard, there are a lot of different builds. In fact I find myself really not liking a lot of skills that are suggested.

Remember even if someone is getting great results that doesn't mean it'll mesh with your playstyle. You may find that an ability or skill you do well with other's just wont like. An example for me would be entropy and Mage's light, i just don't like them, other's do, just not my bag of tea lol.

never said I liked them, I run stam sorc, but the new player asked for advice to get started and I stand by what I wrote to answer that question.

Sorry man, you misunderstood. I meant in general on the forum, not in this thread. I should've been more specific. What you said is dead on.

Edit: grammer may help, my hands are frozen atm on my phone lol

Fair enough. My reply may have come off a tad more aggressive than I intended, and I totally agree that people should experiment and build their own way.
I just feel that when a completely new player asks for help to figure out what the heck is going on in this game it's only reasonable to keep it simple.
