Skills and Speccing question.

I am on PS4.

I was wondering about something that I've recently wanted to know.

I want to know if you MUST have a certain weapon equppied for a passive to take effect or no.

I was wondering this when I decided to try the Sword and Shield. When I switched to my staff and blocked I noticed that the orange glow from the effect of a passive would show.

The passives say you must have that weapon equipped. Or does it mean it must be at least one of your two weapons?

if it's the former, does this mean I could spec into the passives of the sword and shield tree but not need to have a sword and shield?

going on from that, are there passives that wouldn't take effect that are specific to a weapon being used? I can't check as I am not at home.

However if none of that is the case at all and I must at least have the said weapon to be able to use the passives as one of my two weapons then I am severely disappointed. That would be so restrictive, when choosing want to spec into.

All of the passive tooltips for each respective weapon type are prefaced:

WITH A SWORD AND SHEILD EQUIPPED: things happen and stuff

So no, the passives only word when you are holding said weapon in your hands. For instance: I get major expedition from having a bow equipped after I roll dodge. If I roll dodge without my bow equipped-- no major expedition.

    Hope dis helps.

I wonder why when I block with my staff that my passive activates from my sword and shield tree. Or it's just the visual that shows.

Are you sure it's not one of the passives from your champion points. I get the orange glow on my staff when I block sometimes, but I have no passives from the sword and shield line. I know one of my champion point passives has to do with blocking, but I can't remember the name or specifics at the moment.

Are you sure it might not be another passive that is firing? While most, if not all, weapon passives need the weapon equipped and on the active bar, there are passives that are in place just because you put points into them. I think there is some overlap in the visual cues too with passive effects. Also, Champ Point passives can happen if you have those built up.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

PakKat "Everything was going well, until I died"
Gary Gravestink "I am glad you died, I needed the help"

Oh, see now I didn't know Champion point skills would manifest a visual. Yeah actually that makes sense. Thank you. I just checked it was "Retaliation" from the Atronach constellation.
