What is the best way to increase the skills in this? I put a point into hiding to start it off. Do I need to sneak around a lot to get it up?

Steal stuff and sell it to a fence.

lockpicking, stealing, pick pocketing, fencing stolen items are ways to lvl up that skill line.

Steal and either fencer or launder, pick pockets, pick locks... etc.

I don't think sneaking increases it. Lockpicking does and I think the best way to raise it is to sell/launder stolen stuff to fences.

You get a point for every item you launder or fence (opening chests, locked doors and pickpocketing contribute too). But, fencing and laundering are the quickest ways to level the skill. Picking pockets is something to do after you have some levels and have unlocked the passives that help that. While leveling the skill line, you only need one point in the passive that lets you Fence more stuff.

So, go to some docks or a warehouse or a boat and steal all the provisioning ingredients and any other stolen loot you can find. I like Provisioning Ingredients as they stack and there are lots to steal. Launder the Prov Ingredients, Fence what is left or loot that has value.

Note the first passive gives you 110 Fence and 110 Launder, so 220 items per day. So, empty you bags before you go on a crime spree so you can carry enough to max out or near max out in one trip for most efficiency.

Then, once you have leveled the skill enough, then put points into Pickpocket and Sneak (although there are other methods to help Sneak)
