tanking

lordsniper
hi everyone so i am a tank pure and I've seen a fatal flaw with tanking in eso. Why is there no AOE Taunt or provoke I don't understand?? Single target Taunts do not make the game harder just chaotic. The inner fire skills morph should have morphed into a AOE taunt as opposed to a Magic or Stam ability. Will there ever be a true taunt or will tanking forever be a chaotic nightmare. If there is a DLC or Patch pertaining to this please feel free to let me know because this is the only thing i see making this game not necessarily difficult but it kinda makes it stupid in the sense of the tank 10 Mobs and 2.5k magic per inner fire impossible to hold aggro on all of them one heal from the healer and bop the healers one hit(exaggeration of course).

I've found the current single-target taunt to be quite sufficient, it doesn't take too much effort to use it on a number of enemies in a single engagement. All an AoE version would do is cost more I suspect.

The thing is you are noy suppose to taunt every thing. Just the ones that are tankier, or deal tremendous damage or wearing the most armor. Let the dps deal with the clothies, they go down fast. Its a matter of target priotisation, which ones you need as a tank to have aggro on you since technically you have the best damage mitigation.

Hell even in the trailers, the three of them went and took their on their targets. The tankiest took on the big baddie, the medium armor took on the adds while the mage took on the mage.

And the best way to deal with mass mobs is to jump in, either damage them all using caltrops or area cc. As a nb tank I even used 2handers to deal with massed mobs, Brawler and sap essence doing their job, soul tether to just lock them down or before it gets too hairy.

Okey there are a few main things that you got to know as tank.
It is almost impossible to have 10 mobs, and you don't have to do that.

Here is what you need to know as tank:
main priority taunt: The main priority is basically is tanking the boss(es).
after that comes: The big mobs gargoyles lurkers werewolfs etc.. 2 hander and shield guys. Those mobs are able to stun or one hit the enemy player, and as far as I know a healer can't heal through that.
    - lesser priority mobs that hit high but it can be healed through could be mages archers etcc... some mages hit hard depending on the dungeon you are doing but if you are dragon knight there is a easy solution for that, use extended chains.
    - there are mobs that aren't dealing a lot of damage, basically means that they do not really have a priority for taunting, healer should heal through it easily if he even needs to heal.

if you learn what the mobs can do you can adapt really easily and choose which mob you taunt carefully, you don't have to taunt them all.

Hope you can understand what I just typed and good luck trying it out.

I like this single target taunt. Tanking is much more active, have to play more tactically.

I think they are looking at this, was on an eso live - they said mons will be attended to a player using taunt and also if u are the only one taunting they will remove the taunt immune. Thoight it was going to be in IC but nothing in patch notes

one point skipped over. If you could taunt all say 10 enemies at once, and survive/block/reflect/dodge w/e, then I suspect the mechanics required to allow you to do this in PVE could also make you slightly overpowered in PVP?

also AOE spamming would be pretty dull if there was no agro on anyone else and the healer only had to heal you, the other roles might feel a bit mundane if they didn't even have to CC and off heal.

    TL;DR some people enjoy chaos.

Taunts don't work in PVP and anyone can make a tank in PVP, they will just rarely get kills.

Have to agree with the OP. Maybe not an AoE that hits everything, but at least some sort of multi-target taunt. I typically play a healer in dungeons and it seems like I'm the one taking most of the hits because after one big heal, half the mobs are on me. Perhaps I should switch to sword and shield and just use Templar heals while blocking the whole time.

I like the single target taunt. Like it had been mentioned, you don't want aggro off everything. Get the heary hitters and keep them. if you end up with too many adds and your stamina plummets from their attacks so you have no stam left, you're getting ploughed by boss or hard hitting adds and you're dead.

You don't have to taunt per say. Often cc will get you temporary aggro. Just enough for someone else to get a breather. It won't stay with you as long as a taunt though.

Going in as a tank and aggroing everything with a aoe taunt, now that is stupid. It makes the whole run boring as tank get all damage and heals and dps just stand there doing their job.

With single taunt it makes the fights more active as the tank have to look and choose and aim which targets to taunt.Makes it more active for dps and heals as they going to have mobs on them attacking.

I do 2 approach when tanking on trash groups. The aoe dmg and root, where i go into the grp and spam roots then dps just have to aoe the area. The other method I use and the one I like a lot is I go in, use 1 aoe root then start quickly aiming targets individually and taunting them as fast as i can,not all of them but at least 5 targets on me.Its a bit tricky because you have to aim good. But then your grp see that u have most of them and they will be like, wow this tank rocks. And the fact they know u rock by holding so many is because they know there is no aoe taunt.

The day they add a aoe taunt is the day I will quit tanking and since tanking is the role i do most of the time why keep playing? Also adding a aoe taunt will change the whole dungeon trash mobs gameplay for all roles it will make it inactive ,boring and stupid.

Hey there, personnaly i swap between puncture and inner fire to taunt, and i guess if i had a taunt aoe, i would get bored with tanking, the target selection is part of my job and taunt aiming them is another part of it, that's what i like and i guess choosing the right targets is what creates a good and efficient omogenic group strategy. Of course, communication with the group is important...

    ;)<3 my tanking job

Using Puncture morphed for spell and physical damage is all you really need. You should target switching this entire time and thankfully the taunts in this game are a solid duration and not a agro system of you fighting over dps for agro. You should be switching targets while taunting anyways to debuff the mobs so they all die alot faster. Thats the reason for the morph so you arnt wasting your time taunting all the mobs.

And while everyone says it would be boring with aoe taunts it wouldnt really. There would just need to be a few combat changes for npcs like CCs/aoes and all that jazz. If youre telling me tanking in 99% of other mmos is boring because they have aoe taunts youre nuts. ( yes eso is one of the few games without a aoe taunt for tanks)

Also if i recall one of the new armor sets? is a 5 second taunt on charge ( i dont know if that works for aoe charges)

Most MMOs add taunts into all their abilities so you can pretty much be a dps that tanks ( diet DPS ) So this made it not boring.
