Spell damage question

How do I get spell damage? I thought that it came from magicka but apparently on my character it only come from weapons and items that say they give spell damage. Is this accurate?

spell damage (the stat) is usually from set bonuses and your weapons.

spell damage as in, damage your spells do, are from your spell damage stat and your total magika.

Ok so the spell damage stat on my character sheet should only change if I get a stronger staff weapon or if I have a set item that specifically says adds spell damage? Just clarifying so I understand. It's a bit confusing. I always thought that it went up depending on my max magicka.

The name can be a little confusing but spell dmg and magicka are seperate factors that determine how hard your spells will hit. If you increase your magicka your spells will hit harder without raising the spell dmg value. 100 spell dmg equals 1045 magicka to get the same dmg output. You can easily buff your spell dmg by 20% so its more effective to stack spell dmg instead of max magicka. You still need a decent magicka pool (around 25-30k at v14) to avoid running out of magicka quickly.

Spell dmg comes from gear sets boni, like torugs pact 2pc, magnus 4pc etc.
From major sorcery buff (20% increase to spell dmg) given by entropy, surge, sap etc.
From jewelry enchants, although magicka cost reduction enchants are usually better.
And from the Apprentice mundus stone once update 7 goes live.

The first two; yes. I don't believe the latter (spell penetration) has any effect on healing effectiveness.

Spell pen should apply to healing, but at the same time, I can't imagine it doing anything.

Spell pen reduces the opponents spell resistance when struck by a spell. I forget if this is linear or percentage based.

But, healing spells ignore the target's spell resist, because you don't want the tank resisting your heals. So, spell pen reduces their spell resistance (which is already at 0) to... 0. At least I think that's what's happening. I'm a little shaky on how it works there specifically.

So, the short version is, "it should work, but it won't actually do anything."

Spell pen has no effect on heals. Netto resist is target resist minus player penetration, so its linear not percentage based.

So sorcs will be even more dangerous after update 7?

All magicka builds will be more dangerous but sorcs cannot bolt away anymore. The cost of bolt escapen and its mophs keeps increasing by 50% each time its casted within 4 seconds of the previous one. This will greatly reduce the survivability of sorcs, escpecially in 1vX situations.

Your spelldamge is the same as your weapondamage so dw and 2h give the most base spelldamage. Then add setboni and jewelry enchantments. You can also increse it with major sorcery from entropy pots surge,... and minor sorcery from the templar passives. Your magicka just increases the tooltip damage of your skills not the actual spelldamage value which increses thetooltip damage value too
I hope that is what you wanted to know :)
