Leveling Mages' Guild skill line

I was wondering if slotting magelight into one or both of my weapon bars will help the skill line level up (just like using bow and 2H on same bar) faster than simply doing MG quests and acquiring lore books. I would hate to waste a skill point if this won't work. I hear that the meteor ultimate is one the of the most powerful ultimates and would like to use it for my stamina-based NB

Nope, you have to collect books and / or do more of the Mage's Guild questline. This is explained if you are a PC user (don't know about the consoles) if you hover over the XP bar at the top of the screen.

Thank goodness for the quests, because it would take forever to level the skill line on Lore Books alone.

The quests really don't help that much xD Theres only 5 and you get 1 book per quest? then the set bonus which is +20xp, you get get 40xp from the mage guild questline.

Why is the Mage Guild skill line so sparse? One would think it would, uh, have.. spells. Numerous spells. There should honestly be multiple Mage Guild lines for each magic type, like every other ES. Destruction, Alteration, etc.

Right now it's 5 measly skills, some of which are nigh useless, and none of which produces any real damage.

Even with the Mages Quests, if you ignore Cyrodiil, it will take you until the second or third zone of Caldwell's Silver to get to L10 in the Mages Guild. I think you can get there just from your alliance and the books in Cyrodiil, but I have never tried.

However, the two most important skills, Magelight/Inner Light and Entropy can be unlocked by the third zone in your alliance. Just getting to Meteor takes all the time and books.

Mage's Guild Rank 10 = All alliance lorebooks + 3-5 zones of another alliance.

I feel like the most important skill is the mage guild passive that gives you 20% dmg on next attack. Makes for some high hitting ultimates.
