Why the character name restrictions?

The title say it all but WHY do they have restrictions that no 2 characters can have the same name? in addition to it being unrealistic it is annoying to no end. Online ID I can understand but character names heck no. The worst part is there is no random generated suggestions so it can take forever to name one character. I had to help my friend name his character and used the TR name generator and peeked through the 2 CS programs and the CK for names, nothing (had to do that for myself as well).

✭✭You used the name generator and still had a hard time? I didn't know that many people used it but on console I can't see anyones name which ties to your question of not being able to use the same name as others.
I had no problem naming all 16 characters except for trying to use my old Altmer mage name from Oblivion, Elderon...the solution was simple, he's now known as Kelderon.

✭The name is still an identifier, and as such it has to be unique. You can send mails \ whispers to people's account names (@name) or their character name. If they allowed duplicate names, workers at the TPS (Tamriel Postal Service) might have an aneurism.0 -
Sandshark95✭✭✭You can actually see other players' character names on console in the Friends list and, if you're in a guild, Guild Roster section under the Social tab in your menu. I suspect that is why character names are required to be unique.
I feel your pain; for some characters, it took me hours to come up with the perfect name.
