Question about gold improvement

To get the item to improve an item to legendary, can you get it from deconstruct purple items? Maybe with a skill of the same tree?

Thanks!

Yes, you can get purple upgrade materials from deconstructing purple items, but it's still RNG based, and you'll need to have maxed skill points in the extraction skill for that line most likely as well.

Maxed hirelings are the best source of purple and gold upgrade materials from my experience. And of course having the maxed upgrade / tempering skill is also required since at that level you probably want to make sure it's a 100% chance to upgrade.

I assume but am not sure that you can actually upgrade dropped items as well as crafted ones, but I guess I haven't tried that.

yes I have upgraded dropped items.

I loved the fact that I got "Brakenleaf's Bow" as a gift from a live tree. I'll probably carry it around forever, even past any poitn where any of my characters can actually use it.

I also upgrade all my Warlock set bits to purple (at a minimum).

I wish we could upgrade jewelry
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

    PC / NA
    Thenathra - Khajiit Stormblade (Sorcerer - Dual-wield Swords/Lightning Staff)

Several alts I've created, but haven't leveled much yet:
    Norryne - Dunmer Paladin (Templar - Two-hand Hammer/One-hand Hammer & Shield)
    Demerwei - Argonian Shadowscale (Nightblade - Dual-wield Axes/Dual-wield Daggers)
Gohrnag - Orc Elementalist (Dragon Knight - Frost Staff/Lightning Staff)
Kerasha - Redguard Mystic (Templar - Flame Staff/Restoration Staff)
Alawael - Bosmer Assassin (Nightblade - Bow/Two-hand Battleaxe)
Hjerlm the Quiet - Nord Dragonguard (Dragon Knight - One-hand Sword & Shield/Two-hand Greatsword)

Are you asking if, when deconstructing a purple (epic) item, you can get the yellow (legendary) temper? If so, I don't think this is the case. From past experience you only get an equal or possibly lesser item out of it. You can however get yellow tempers from refining raw materials! There is a perk which does this, I can't remember the name at the moment but have a look on the skill lines. I often get 1 yellow per 200 stack of raw material, alongside other tempers

    I do re-glyph mine.

For example I do have a character that loves the .... viper's something or other ... Viper's Sting dropped set.

However I've always only gotten the dropped jewelry with a bonus to alchemy - which I hate. So I re-glyph them to a damage bonus. I've done similar things with dropped necklaces that will have "X magicka regen" and then "Y Stamina Bonus". You can't change the second one, but you can change the "top" one. So I fix them to match up better (if I'm going to keep them).

I've also been known to enchant a low-level "empty" piece of jewelry - just so my character has SOMETHING useful in that particular slot.

    Hey olly,

Yes that's exactly what I meant, I thought it was as you said but thanks for the clarification.
I guess I'll only get the lvl 3 hireling in order to try and get those legendary items...

With one lvl 3 hireling, it's going to be a long time to get legendary improvements. Drop rate is awful. Your best option for legendary impovements is to farm crafting mats, refine and use them in writs. On average stack of 200 drops one and at least max level writs drop one quite often.

By refine you mean create new items or materials? What level should they be to get legendary improvement?

I think he ment refining RAW material to ingots, cloth or sanded wood.

I don't care for the 0 value items either. Like the Armors and Weapons at 0 value, they are not even worth deconning.

However the thinking behind it is, a junk ring is a junk ring and hence has 0 value. One would expect to find junk in a random container. Heck, there are boxes in my garage that have stuff in them that most would consider to be junk.

0 value items is why I don't have autoloot turned on as I hate filling up my bags with items that have no worth to me, decon or vendor wise.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
