Researching an item

Hey everyone

So basically I just hit lvl1 VET and never touched the research option, yet

Can somebody please briefly explain how it works

I know that if you want to attach a certain trait to an item you want to create, u need that trait researched

But what is trait in itself? If once you learn the trait can you apply it to any armor, or how does it work?

I have destroyed and researched two items but nothing really changed, it seems that I still don't know the trait, is the learning by chance?

Does the quality of weapon/armor increase the likelihood that u will learnt the trait or quality is irrelevant?

Thanks

Trait research is by piece of gear. If you research the exploration trait on a pair of heavy armor boots, you still need to research it on the belt, helm, etc. as well.

You could have all 9 traits researched on one piece of gear, but that's the only piece you'd be able to craft with any of those traits.

If you research the Divines (for example) on a light armour hat, you will be able to craft light hats with the divines trait, and boost your mundus stone power. You cannot craft light boots with divines because you researched it on the hat, you have to research it separately.

Some traits are much more useful than others. The real benefit from from the crafted sets, which have 3,4 and 5 piece bonuses. Those sets can only be made by crafters with the minimum number of traits researched. Seducer (for example) is a 3-trait set. You can only make Seducer items for pieces that you have completed research on (any) three traits.

    Hi there.

Trait research works on a per item basis.

There are 8 traits per item type and the traits for weapons and armor are slightly different.

So if you learn a trait on light hat, you won't know that for medium helmet or heavy Helm, for example.

The research time for a trait goes up the more traits you know for that item. So your first trait on Shield (for example) takes 6 hours, the second 12, the 3rd 24 and so on. Keep this in mind and start longer researches when you have less time to play.

The quality of the weapon has nothing to do with the ability to research it. It's always 100% certainly that you will learn the trait at the end of the research time.

    I hope that helps.

Traits are intrinsic properties of crafted gear. When you create a piece of armor, you are given the option to create it using one of 9 gems. Depending on the one you choose, the piece you are crafting will have the trait associated with the gem. Here is a link to the info: http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Traits

Now, here is where it gets interesting. There are armor sets that can only be crafted if you have enough traits researched on the pieces you craft. If you create 2, 3, 4, or 5 items in the set and wear them all at the same time, you will get extra effects. Here is a link: elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Set+Bonus+Crafting+Locations

So there is a benefit to researching as much as possible as it allows you to make these special sets.

You're going to want to sink points into Metallurgy, Stitching, and Carpentry as Rank IV in each "Reduces research times by 25%, limits research time to 30 days, and allows the research of three items at once."
"Some enjoy bringing grief to others. They remind M'aiq of mudcrabs—horrible creatures, with no redeeming qualities."
