I just started alchemy. So there is 4 traits per reagent. Blessed Thistle for example. I ate one and learned the restore stamina trait. There is still 3 more question marks/traits to be learned. Does that mean I need to keep eating them to discover those extra traits? I don't want to waste them by eating them all.

You can discover only the first trait with consuming. For the rest you a) start experimenting, by randomly mixing them up. If they have a common trait, it will be discovered. Or b) you google the eso alchemy and open a guide book to see which herbs to match with which other ones.

Definitely use a guide, as you will simply be wasting water and herbs if you use the wrong combination of ingredients and fail to make a potion.

There are several good guides online. I posted my alchemy notes on my blog a few days ago. If you are on the PC, you can get an addon like Potion Maker that makes alchemy easy. For example, you select the properties you want and it will find all the possible combinations with the reagents and solvents you have on your or in the bank.

Anyone have a guide? I cannot find one online. At least a guide that shows exactly which 2 herbs can be mixed together.

Very nice web tool for alchemy located @ http://tamrieljournal.com/alchemy-simulator/

It's an alchemy simulator that lets you combine reagents with the tool and tells you what the potion effects will be (up to 3 reagents), it also lets you sort herbs by trait and shows you all the traits of each herb.

Very interesting and fun to play with.
