Synergy question

When you use a skill such as blazing shards, or the templar aoe purge (name eludes me atm) and someone activates the synergy, does the spell disappear or does it hang out for its duration just without the ability for someone else to synergize(sp?)

Along with that for each spell cast can only one person use the synergy? Or can everyone?
