Traditional tanking is needed when?

This a PVE questions. Just getting started with my toons, one of which is an Altmer Sorc. I find, at least up to lvl 20, that ESO is MMO-lite. Not a criticism, just thus far open world PVE is not overly dangerous if one has played MMOs/FPSs for a while...

SO, I am enjoying what I call an offtank/DPS build -- similar to Deltia's Velvet Hammer but with my own play style. Great fun...

MY QUESTIONS

1. For open world PVE, does the "trinity" really matter? I am early days leveling but it seems that with the skill point system and decent movement even the "world bosses" -- which seem more like fortified mobs -- are not overly difficult. I say that as a soloer but with OCD-esque book reading ands skyshards.

2. Does this change for PVE -- e.g., is an off-tank viable or do "trinity" roles become vital. No praise, no blame...just curious.

I ask because it seems almost all players (including me) running around are DPS. Just curious how serious the more coordinated PVE is.

I am not looking for hardcore raiding, just curious what the dynamics are. Frankly, even playing in Hong Kong (I am a Yank) with 300+ latency I can still move round mobs so it just seems "lite". At my age and pace, that is welcome, lol.

Cheers.

Not sure if I understand your questions. You mean, if healers and tanks are needed in this game ? Definately :)
It is possible to unite all 3 roles in 1 character. You can be all 3 at the same time and you won't believe what a good feeling it is, to be able to adapt to everything and to switch roles on a fly.

That's why I love my healer build for dungeons. I can heal, tank and DPS at the same time. If our tank dies, I taunt the monsters and tank them to protect the fragile DPS' and give them time to ress. I can also deal high damage if needed.
Sometimes you have to decide, if it's better to heal your allies or to sacrifise them to finish a boss
Because in the end the only thing that matters is that you win. And believe me, a full healer is very bad at finishing a boss on his own....

For general overworld PvE, there is no real need to define yourself as a single role.

However, once you get into group dungeons and other, harder PvE content, yes, the 'trinity' roles are there and are very much needed. I've been able to scrape through some of the lower-level group dungeons without a dedicated healer, but mid-game that won't fly as much.

Thanks...makes sense. I'd assume that the Templar and DK are favored for these roles? That said it looks like NB and mage tanks with heals can be quite effective.

Your chosen role becomes important in group content. In open PvE, questing, exploring doesnt really matters, since it's indeed easy. But in group dungeons, oh my, you have to bring out the max from the role you pick else all going to hell.

Generally for questing it's adviseable to set up one of your bars for dps, so you can clear areas alone faster, and the other for skills that will support your chosen role, so you can level up those too. I for instance tend to switch my bars when I take the quest rewards, to the one, I am not using much but want it to level up as well, since quest rewards give xp to skilllines too.

Is DPS viable for finding groups or is it the overwhelming choice of many?

I was thinking of setting up my mage for tanking on the 2nd bar to train as you recommend. With the right build they look like they can be rather effective.

Actually, now even more than before because of block stamina regen nerf, nightblade tanks can shine thanks to their resource regen in Siphoning Strikes. The skill is still being tweaked though, so let's wait how it turns out. Still, I'm sticking with my DK and NB tanks in the future.

Low level content usually doesn't require perfect group composition, but it helps. It will matter more in veteran content. In PvP tanks can be a good distraction if enemies fall for it, but otherwise aren't all that useful.

Overwhelming choice of many unfortunately, but who could blame them? (it's a very fun role to play)

For veteran dungeons / trials the trinity is needed, but there are more dps and healers out there and not that many tanks.

I notice that when I look for a group and say that I'm dps I can hardly find one (PUG groups that is). But when I say I'm a tank, I can get a PUG invite much easier.

In veteran dungeons you 100% need roles. And you need people to be good at them. If your tank isn't getting aggro or keeps getting killed, got no chance. If your healer isn't doing his job, no chance. If Mr dps isn't that much dps, again no chance.

For questing you can easily merge all roles and don't needed specialise in ome.

I tank in dungeons and use most my magica and stamina to stay alive. In questing, I swap to a few dps attributes and mix and match.
