Patch made the game unplayable...

I normally play on a Dell Latitude laptop due to my schedule (I am the lead IT and IS specialist for a company in the USA). The system is a Core i7 2.80GHz chip with four cores, 8GB of DDR3, and an nVidia Quadro NVS4200M with 4GB dedicated RAM. Normally I average 40fps in this game, sometimes more. Last night I was getting in the low 50's in a dungeon. I login today, after patching, and get 17fps. What the heck? On top of that, the longer I play, the lower it goes. When I finally quit I was getting about 7-8fps! I can actually type a message, stop typing, sit back, and watch the text type itself and send itself. This is crazy! Was there no testing with this patch? How the heck did it get released? The entire guild is talking about this mess of a patch.

Here is a short video showing off the problems. This is MINOR compared to how it was earlier. Be sure to watch it in 1080p for the buggy goodness. Currently, I cannot play due to this patch.

Oh and before you blame my system, I can play much more intense games with no issues. I can even play "The Forest" without issue, and it is HARD on resources. So when can we expect a patch for the patch?

Yeah something is not right with this patch. My FPS and latency is normal but the game is playing like my FPS is around 10. Delays on everything, jerky movements, etc. I've repaired twice with no change.

I have gone as far as checking drivers and all, no go. It is just ESO. The Forest still works and so do my other games, only ESO stopped working and only AFTER the patch. I cannot get it to go above 20fps now, no matter what I do. Something is broken badly, and I expect it to be fixed. If they added some new rendering model, release a patch with both and allow the user to choose. This is sorry. I cannot play the game now.

Alright, now this is getting seriously stupid. Now every time I start the launcher I get error 209 with a title in French (I am in the USA) stating that it cannot determine the version. If I use the update button it errors because I am up to date. Sometimes closing and reopening the launcher allows it to work, more than half the time it does not. Is this an alpha patch or something? This is pathetic! I did not have these issues during the beta!

Oh and this drive is fine. I have checked the entire disk, checked the file-system, and the SMART data. Again, none of these issues existed prior to Monday.

Odd, a patch came out and the population blows up with similar problems, yet many responses are that it is on the users' ends. Maybe we all got hacked at the same time!

I'm still getting that same "cannot determine version" error - however as per the usual pattern, the first few days I actually had to do repairs, now it's down to telling me there is a problem that I'm going to have to repair, but not actually requiring the repair.

    It's moody.

Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

I also am getting the 'cannot determine version' errors, and no matter how many times I repair, I continue to get the error. I'm still able to play the game though strangely enough.

Also, the lag has been a lot worse then normal recently, I've been playing since the beta and the in town lag, especially in Mournhold (NA / PC) has been crazy.

It looks like your instance is accompanied by some unusually heavy CPU and/or GPU resource utilization. Could you test to see if your camera locks in place when you autorun? If it does not, it could just be some resource hogging going on (still an extremely serious issue, as it's basically a showstopper in your case). If it does, it may share a solution once the devteam is able to find a fix.

I was on the same line of thought as you. However, this is a GAMING laptop. In other words, only Windows and games. No background tasks. No office suite. No NOTHING. Either way, I started task manager and watched CPU usage while playing.

Core 1: maxed at about 33% usage
Core 2: Less than 5% usage
Core 3: Stays around 90% usage
Core 4: Maxes around 25% usage

Clearly threading in the ESO engine has been ruined. It is not using my computer's resources. Assume 400% is max (100% multiplied by four cores). I am currently maxing at about 150~160%. My system is NOT short on horsepower. Again, prior to the patch Monday, I was averaging 40fps out of towns and 25~30fps in towns. Not max details mind you, but it was playable. Now I am unable to play at all.

An oddity I did notice however, is that upon first logging into the world, cores 1 and 3 both use close to 90%, and my framerate is around 27 (I am outside Davon's Watch). After that, core 1 drops down slowly to around 1/3 usage (33%) and my framerate dips down to around 15fps. Sit long enough and I can get it down to 7~8fps. It is like some thread is dying out. This did NOT happen prior to Monday.

I am losing my patience with ESO and am at the point where if this does not get fixed, I will NEVER buy another Zenimax title again. I mean this is just pathetic. These geniuses roll out a patch which breaks EVERYTHING and a week later we don't get a roll-back, new patch, or anything? What the heck are the people at Zenimax smoking?

I cannot run and look around at ALL now. When I press a key it takes up to FIVE SECONDS for it to register, then my player walks, but then keeps walking for a long time after I release the key! Add to that the inability to look around and my character keeps running into things!

On top of that, my game starts at about 40fps, which it always did before. Within one minute I am at 20fps. Over the course of 15min, I am down to 7~8fps where it stays. It is like they have code which removes a certain percentage of your framerate every minute you play. What the hell is wrong with this patch?

I have tried dropping details to minimum, disabling sound and music, removing all addons, and even reinstalling. Nothing works! The patch from this past Monday sucks! Issue a rollback patch! DO SOMETHING! This is NOT a beta at this point, but we're dealing with a product that appears to be in alpha!

(Copied post from other, related threads.)

Support suggested I uninstall my virus scanner (Avast) entirely and test again -- obviously not a permanent solution, but intended for testing only since a PC should not go unprotected.

On my sister's computer, so far, uninstalling and reinstalling Avast seems to have done the trick SO FAR. Two important notes:
1.) We need a longer test duration to ensure the problem is solved for her. At least 4 days, if not a week or more.
2.) When installing Avast, do a CUSTOM INSTALLATION and REMOVE the bloat. In her case, I only installed shields, browser protection, browser cleanup, home network security, and secure virtual machines.

On my computer, the solution was hit-and-miss. I ran into a hitch after a reinstall, but no further hitches after a second uninstall/reinstall cycle (on the second cycle, I removed Secure Virtual Machines from Avast).

Could we get some data from those suffering this issue on whether they are running Avast, or what antivirus they are running if they aren't? Also, could you try uninstalling your anti-virus, testing ESO, then reinstalling your anti-virus and testing ESO again, posting the results of each test? Consider a full and/or boot-time virus/malware scan to ensure your computer is clean before uninstalling, just to be safe.

You may also wish to document what features of your anti-virus you installed, if it has a list of options, so we can compare notes across varying machines.

    (Addendum)
This may or not be a fix for you, but it's one more point to test. I honestly wouldn't have thought this would have worked myself, but somehow it did. Freaking computer juju, man... We're two days into testing, and so far so good.

I don't use Avast I use Norton. I have a gaming profile on my virus software so it isn't running computer scans etc when I am gaming. My spare system doesn't have antivirus and the same problem exists there. Also two different ISPs have been tried as well.

Did you change NVIDIA drivers recently? I know the past two releases are having issues. I ended up rolling back to 347.88 which somewhat helped the problem with mine. Isn't perfect but I can play now. Being FPS sounds like graphics issues and something is causing your laptop to have a serious problem with rendering. Have you tried setting an NVIDIA profile for the game? Keeping the video card power full tilt aka max performance for the game only? The two things I have to keep on for my game profile under NVIDIA to keep it running smooth are max performance on the power supply to the video card and Vsync set to use the 3D application and I have a GTX970 card.

Also I ran some tests and yes the threading seems to really be wack now. My core 3 is almost maxed as well.

Avast is not causing server/client limbo disconnects. Once you've added ESO to your list of 'safe' programs, it could care less after that.

Same with a firewall - unless you have some hard core setup that is actively scanning all traffic, it's not an issue with either of these (especially if they didn't cause issue before.)

Other aspects, such as chat, voice chat, etc work just fine during these periods of non-response. Other network functions work just fine.

This all kicked in again about a patch or two ago. Major slow down, rollback / rubber banding, most notably in Group Dungeons.

Incidentally, you should never have to disable or reinstall your AV software to fix a game issue. It's there to protect your system, not allow the game to be coded poorly.

It's the dev's responsibility to have their software work with AntiVirus, not the other way around.

ESO, once again, is the common factor, and this wasn't happening a patch or two ago.

I am also experiencing latency issues and drastic drops in framerate. There are many threads that exist on these forums, which address low FPS issues and point towards Addons as being the culprit.

    Reference:
    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/83187/add-ons-cripple-framerate

This is only happening to me in Cyrodil (Azura and Thornblade EU servers).

FPS is dropping as low as 2 and rendering PvP completely unplayable. I have drastically lowered graphics settings although this is a fairly new gaming rig that plays many other massively multiplayer games with no issues on Ultra settings.

One thing I noticed while troubleshooting configurations and addons is the Franklin Minimap addon is flickering. I think this addon was updated within the last few days, in most cases automatically through the Minion manager.

Coincidentally, I just opened Minion and both Destinations and Minimap have new scheduled updates to 1.7.5 and 2.63 respectively.

I just tested disabling the Minimap addon and my FPS shot up to 60. Enabling the Minimap addon resulted in an FPS drop to as low as 2.

In addition to the steps mentioned above, I also disabled all of the clocks and timers in the Wykkd toolbar to minimize screen refresh OnUpdate events, as mentioned in the link above.

I noticed an immediate stabilization of the frames per second staying steady between 30-60 for the last hour.

I will report back later should the FPS destabilize. For now it's running well again since the addon updates.

    I hope this helps someone.

I don't use addons, never have. Good to know you found some issues with a few addons. I am sure it will help some as a lot of players use those addons.

Most campaigns in PVP are horrible for FPS. I moved over to Azura and my FPS is at best 15. I was playing on Haderus and kept 60 FPS except in huge battles and it would drop to around 40. I really regret the move to say the least....

Addons are not the issue. I have now confirmed that this IS an ESO game engine issue. The stupid patch has me using ONE of my four cores! It always pegs core 1 or 2, and the other three are ALWAYS unused. Check out the screenshot linked below. This is ridiculous! I could have a damn AMD bulldozer with 16 cores and it would play like a friggin' Pentium 2! Threading is hosed and I cannot believe I am the only one with this issue.

Now, I have disabled core parking (Google it if you're unsure what it is) and the issue persists. All other games use all four cores, and core parking was NOT an issue prior to the patch. The game worked, I slept, I woke up and patched it, and now I can only use one core. I checked the INI and both of the threading settings are still at -1. I even deleted it and let it create a new one. No go. I need to be able to use all four cores. Jesus, UT99 can use all four!

You know what's weird? After the expansion my mother now has constant loading screen issues. Things we haven't seen since the beta. I still cannot play due to the game pretending to be a single-threaded application on my system, but oddly enough it runs smoothly on my mother's system, and hers is an older Core2Quad! I guess my system is so much newer the game decided to level the playing field by disabling threading.

Yes, I am getting seriously pissed at this crap. The worst part is that Zenimax knows NOTHING about coding or how applications work. They actually wrote a guy off for having 32bit Windows 7. He started having crashes so they blamed it on his OS! How stupid is that? The damn game is 32bit! Who builds 32bit apps anymore? I have been 64bit since 2003! That is Linux AND Windows, so why is ESO a 32bit game? I could go on and on about this...

Was playing a LOT of today ... mostly the same character. Most of the day was fine, no lag noted. Then late evening/afternoon I was in Reaper's March and there was a LOT more characters.

Skip lag (where everything pauses every 5-6 seconds or so) started up.

Left for a more desolate part of the game - suddenly the problem was solved.

I had the exact issues described in this thread and they appear to be resolved by disabling the Fraynklin Minimap addon as Kostas mentioned. Not suggesting this applies to OP as he appears convinced his issue is with the game, but recommend testing this to anyone else experiencing the issues if you have that addon.
