I'm assuming heavy attacks means holding the corresponding button down as opposed to simply tapping it, correct?

    Yes, precisely.

Light attacks = tap attack button
Heavy attacks = hold attack button

Heavy attacks vary in the time it takes to charge them, depending on the type of weapon you use. Also, with the exception of Bow, all heavy attacks will "auto-release" or automatically occur once they have been charged and do not require the player to actually release the attack button. For Bows, heavy attacks are charged by holding down the attack button, but are not released until the player manually releases the attack button; a Bow user can tell if a heavy attack is fully charged by looking to see if the Bow is fully drawn and/or if the arrow tip is lightly gleaming/shining.

also your elbow does a little wiggle when a bow is fully charged.

The best thing to do with a bow is to cast a spell instead of releasing a heavy attack. This is known as heavy weaving and it will double your DPS ;D

    pro tip for free.
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

Watch when the enemy is stunned also you can really put a hurt on them than with a heavy strike.
