Xbox One Crown Code Redemption

Can anyone explain how to redeem digital codes for Crowns? I purchased an Xbox One Crown digital code on Amazon tonight, and sent it to my cousin as a gift. He attempted to redeem the code in the Xbox Store, but it said it was an invalid code.
Is that the proper location in which to redeem the code, or is there another way? Could the issue be cause by the rampant Xbox Live issues going on tonight?

Or go xbox store and use the redem code option make sure its right code0
