Dear Zos: The Console UI is Horrible and here's how to fix it

I'm really unimpressed with the job the UI team did with the Console overlay and here's why:

1. Item compare is a mess. There's no simple way to know whether a quest reward or item drop is better than what you are using at the time. The Fix: adhere to a simple design rule that states that any time an item is highlighted there must be a simple way to compare it to what you are using...including your secondary weapon.

2. Inventory management/sorting: It's impossible to look at all of your stuff and sort/filter it. The Fix Take a look at how PC modders have handled this. In particular, Advanced Filters by Randactyl and ingeniousclown.

3. Crafting It's very difficult to know what traits you've researched, what you haven't researched. People are actually keeping their own spreadsheets outside of the game. The Fix Again, PC modders have come up with great solutions. In this case have a look at Craftstore by AlphaLemming which among other things shows a grid that makes easy to tell which traits are researched.

4. Gear and Skills Presets - There's no way to easily switch between gear/ability sets say for example a DPS loadout vs. a Tank or Healing one. The Fix look at mods like Outfitter, Swaps, AlphaGear.

There's a theme here, and in general it's simple. You should be looking at the most popular mods on PC, recognize that the default UI/UX is seriously lacking, and then implement something similar on console. Yes, you copied LootDrop - good job, but you have to do more. A lot more.

When I heard that you spent a lot of time working on the console UI, I assumed you would have done something similar to what I'm now suggesting. But honestly, it doesn't show.

I personally enjoyed console inventory.. because it was sorted the same way as advanced filters.. instead of having a giant "materials" tab (like base game PC).. you have "blacksmithing", "trait stones" etc. I'm not sure how else it would get closer to the addon? Was also easy to hop between categories by using trigger

    Hi Bizz,

Thanks for everything you do for the community. But, I disagree that the console UI is similar to Advanced filters. I will take your advice and try using the triggers to switch between major categories...that probably would make things easier. Thanks!

Oh, @Jando before I knew about the triggers thing, I would totally agree that it was terrible, lol. But yes, console inventory is actually sorted just like (maybe there's a couple differences I didn't notice, but it's close) advanced inventory.. it's just all in one list.. so using the trigger will jump you from "blacksmithing" category, right down to "clothing" category (or whatever order they are in).

The UI needs a Buff/debuff bar, Combat log and chat window before anything else is implemented.

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I actually like the effect representations of buffs/debuffs instead of timers. Also, I don't want text chat on Console. 90% of chat is LFG and LTS/LTB..they need to make those systems better....not take the easy way out.

Ah yes, rather than sort by "heavy" its sorted by "chest" on console isn't it? Makes sense. I hop between the two but PC is primary so I don't always remember the details.

My thought on the other things? I agree IF the fixes were added added to PC base game as well. It's nonsense for PC to have to depend on addons if ZOS thinks its needed enough to be on console ;) *cough* lootdrop *cough* Update 7 is going to break our addons you know ;)

While I agree that the supposed need for chat is really just ZOS not implementing certain features properly, text for those who want it should be a thing. Some people may have hearing or speaking disabilities and others may simply not feel comfortable using their voice for fear of harassment. I would have no use for text chat if ZOS just fixed their group and trading mechanisms but I understand that others do.

The debuff animations are only useful if timing one effect. Multiple effects can not be accurately timed or seen through the use of animations. One could keep the timers in their head, but seeing as ZOS recognized the convenience of having a timed animation on screen, putting in an option for a numerical timer would be nice.

I would also like to see my phat crit thank you.

    @MissBizz
I'm sure the PC modders will get most major addons updated pretty quickly. ..especially because it's a big update that people will be playing on PTS.

On your other point, about UI improvements for the Console coming to PC....I don't see that happening..remember the overlay is entirely different. That being said, it still would be nice...but i don't see them making it a priority.

I agree with all your suggestions - they'd be great changes to the game which would make it easier / more fun to play.

    This, for PC and console.

Official and optional native buff/debuff bar and scrolling combat text toggles are confirmed for both though not for the Imperial City launch (the API for PC addons will be opened up for proper ones in 1.7/2.1), but combat logging options (the API changes on the PC will allow proper addons for this, finally), minimap, and console chat windows have not been yet :).

Sadly the sort changes depending on where you are viewing it. If you are at a vendor it is different than when you are at a bank. It's still a huge mess overall.
